Languages The ability to communicate in an additional language such as French or Japanese is an important 21st century skill. Students develop knowledge, understanding and skills that enable successful participation in a global society. Communication in an additional language expands students’ horizons and opportunities as national and global citizens.Additional language acquisition contributes to and enriches intellectual, educational, linguistic, metacognitive, personal, social and cultural development. It requires intellectual discipline and systematic approaches to learning, which are characterised by effective planning and organisation, incorporating processes of self-management and self-monitoring.

Language Subjects General subjects are: French and Japanese1. Pre-requisite: It is recommended that students will have achieved a minimum of a C standard in Year 10 in either French or Japanese.2. Unit informationUnit 1 – My World: Friends, family, hobbies and interests, leisure activities, free time, part time jobs, education. Comparisons with Australia and France/JapanUnit 2 – Exploring our World: Travel, famous places, technology, media, contribution of French/Japanese culture to the world

Unit 3 – Our society: Roles and relationships, changing nature of society, stereotypes, groups in society, socialising with friendsUnit 4 – My Future: post school plans, university, gap year, formal, driver’s licence, becoming an adult, positives and negatives of being independent, the role of French/Japanese in your future

Languages Subjects Assessment Technique Types:

• IA1 - Examination — Short response in English to a variety of stimulus materials (15%)

• IA2 – Examination — Combination response. Short response in English, extended written response in French/Japanese; one on one conversation (30%)

• IA3 – Extended response — spoken multimodal task in French/Japanese; one on one conversation (30%)

• IA4/EA - Examination — Combination response. Short response in English, short response and extended written response in French/Japanese (25%)
