Cyber threat – traveller practicalities
These guidance apply to high risk travel in addition to the general information security and standard travel guidance.
Before you travel
During travel
Notify the IT Service Desk prior to travel. Take only essential equipment and information. Consider leaving laptops behind. If you have to use removable media, only use encrypted/secured removable devices. Remove any non-essential data from your devices prior to the trip. In cases of specific concern ask IT for “clean” devices before you travel.
Keep all devices/removable media with you at all times: do not leave in hotel safe. Try to avoid Wi-Fi, except that provided by your company or a reliable partner.
Minimise use of airport or hotel Wi-Fi. When using Wi-Fi is unavoidable, use company VPN or third party VPN, e.g. TunnelBear on a personal device).
Do not put yourself in a position where you are vulnerable to coercion (respect local laws and customs at all times).
Change your passwords. Virus check your device or ask the IT Service Desk to do it for you. Report any concerns to the IT Service Desk.
