Going Roller Skating

Today I am going to a park in downtown Houston called Discovery Green.

Skating is good for my body and my brain. Skating is good exercise. Exercise keeps me strong and healthy. It will be fun!

What should I bring? I might need a jacket, depending on the weather. I will also want to be safe, so I should bring a helmet and knee pads. There will be music playing, too. If I don’t want to hear the music, I can bring my headphones. I can also bring my own special snack.

I will go skating at ________ o’clock. ________________ will go with me. I will stay with ________________ at all times.

I can roll in my own wheelchair, if I want! There is a ramp for me to access the rink easily.

When I arrive at the skating rink, I will walk to the counter to get my skates. I might need to be patient if there are other people in line.

I will let the person at the skate counter know that my shoe size is _____. I can use my voice to tell him/her, use my communication device or use a communication card.

Next, I will sit down and __________________ will help me put on my skates. Or, I can do it all by myself! I can tell __________________ if my skates fit correctly.

Once my skates are on my feet, I am ready to step onto the rink. I will hold the wall or someone’s hand and step slowly.

After skating for a while, I can take a break for a drink, a snack, or to use the bathroom. If I’m tired or just want to cool down, I can rest in the “chill out” area by the skate rental counter.

I may fall down while skating. That’s ok! Falling is a part of skating. If I fall, I will be calm and not get upset. An adult will help me get up again. I can ask an adult for help or a break anytime!

I will do my best and have fun roller skating at Discover Green!
