What is Highwall Mining?

• The ability to mine coal from…

– a visible, horizontal coal seam

– rectangular, parallel, unsupported drives

– unmanned cutter head and coal transport system

– mining unit positioned outside the drive, in front of the highwall

Why use a Highwall miner?

Maximum Extraction – Low cost coal compared to traditional mining methods

Safe Operation – The entire mining cycle is completed by a four man crew,

with no personnel going underground at any time.

Low cost production method:

– No removal of overburden required

– No lighting, ventilation, roof support, etc.

– Highly automated, high production per man hour

Extracts additional coal, otherwise lost:

– Mines coal beyond economic strip ratio

– Under spoil heaps

– Under some surface features (environmental, infrastructure, cultural)
