Fthiotis

Fthiotis, is a state in Greece, with characteristic properties: strategic location, fertile land, ideal climate, variety of productive resources, continuous habitation since antiquity, history and culture.

Fthiotis was the kingdom of Achilles and he was the ruler of Myrmidons, the residents of Pelasgiko Argos, Alos, Alopi, Trachina and Fthia.

According to mythology, Gorgopotamous was the place where Zeus stroke with his lightning his son. Hercules, in order to end his torture from the poisonous tunic. Zeus made a hole in the ground where Gorgopotamous sprang and wiped out the flames.

Lamia is a city in central Greece. The city has a continuous history since antiquity, and is today the capital of the regional unit of Fthiotis and the Region of Central Greece.

First of all, there are many accounts that justify its name. One account says that the city was named after the mythological figure of Lamia, the daughter of Poseidon , and queen of the Trachineans. Another holds that it is named after the Malians, the inhabitants of the surrounding area. In the Middle Ages, Lamia was called Zetounion.

Let’s take now a deeper look at the city’s history. Archaeological excavations have shown the site of Lamia to have been inhabited since at least the Bronze Age (3rd millennium BC), but the city was first mentioned after the earthquake of 424 BC, when it was an important Spartan military base.

In Antiquity, the city played an important role due to its strategic location, controlling the narrow coastal plain that connected southern Greece with Thessaly and the rest of the Balkans. Little is known of the city's history after that. In Late Antiquity, the city was the seat of a bishop. From 1446, the town was under Ottoman control, until it became part of the newly independent Kingdom of Greece in 1832 Until the annexation of Thessaly in 1881, it was a border city.

The Castle of Lamia houses the local Museum of Archaeology. Here is an interesting collection of items on display dating from the Hellenistic period, which include: ceramics, sculptures, statues and small geometric figures.

The four main squares of Lamia

The administrative buildings, hotels and taverns are grouped around the four main squares of the city:

• Freedom Square • Diakos Square• Park Sguare• People’s Square. Each of them has characteristic features: cathedral,

plane-trees and fountains, statue of the revolutionary hero Athanasios Diakos, which is the emblem statue of Greece.

Education in Greece

The Greek educational system is mainly divided into three levels, primary, secondary and tertiary, with an additional post-secondary level providing vocational training.

Primary education is divided into o kindergarten lasting one or two years,

ando primary school spanning six years

(ages 6 to 12). Secondary education comprises two

stages: o Gymnasio (variously translated as

Middle or Junior High School), a compulsory three-year school, after which students can attend

o Lyceum (an academically - oriented High School) or Vocational training.

Higher Tertiary education is provided by Universities and Polytechnics, Technological Educational Institutes (T.E.I.) and Academies, which primarily cater for the military and the clergy.

Undergraduate courses typically last 4 years (5 in polytechnics and some technical/art schools, and 6 in medical schools),

Postgraduate (MSc level) courses last from 1 to 2 years and

Doctorates (PhD level) from 3 to 6 years.
