A WORLDWIDE
GROUP
Imerys Kaolin is a world leading producer of calcined kaolins, and hydrousspecial functionality Kaolins untreated or surface modified to further enhance the performance, and hard and soft kaolins. Imerys supplies the Global rubber industries, offering strong technical understanding of our products and their applications.
Imerys Kaolin investment in product and application development is a clearcommitment to our customers in the rubber industry.
Imerys Kaolin has a proven history of close technical collaboration withproducers, compounders and processors that has led to an in-depth understanding of the mineral requirements of the rubber industry.
Kaolin is characterized by its fine particle size, lamellar or even hyper platyunique particle shape and chemical inertness. This combination of platyshape and fine particle size results in improved processability, improved reinforcement and improved mechanical properties like, tensilestrength, flexural strength, abrasion and tear strength, but also betterelectrical properties. .
Imerys kaolins can be a cost effective replacement/extender for more expensive or difficult to process synthetic components (i.e. ground silica, precipitated silica, fumed silica, carbon black). Kaolin also provides barrierproperties which are beneficial when formulating compounds for hosesand gaskets, whereas the Hyper platy kaolins can be an added value fillerin Inner Liner formulations.
Fully calcined kaolins and hydrous kaolins can be treated with functionalized silanes to give a particle surface capable of chemically coupling with the polymer. Filler dispersion is also improved. Due to the reduced surface activity, Imerys functional kaolin clays give good reinforcement and permanent set properties, maintaining very efficientcompounding process.
KEY APPLICATION AND BENEFITS
Reinforcement£ Resistance to chemical attack and very low chemical reactivity£ Low compression set for good sealing characteristics
Mechanical properties£ Tensile strength£ Flexural strength£ Abrasion and tear strength
Electrical properties£ High volume resistivity£ Low tan delta£ Low relative permittivity
Barrier and Low Permeability
WHAT IS KAOLIN?
Kaolin (china clay) is a hydrated aluminosilicate crystalline mineral(kaolinite) with very high melting point and chemical resistance formedover many millions of years by the hydrothermal decomposition of graniterocks. Hydrous kaolin is characterized by its fine particle size, plate like orlamellar particle shape.
Calcined Kaolin is an anhydrous aluminim silicate produced by heatingultrafine natural kaolin to high temperatures in a kiln. The calcinationprocess increases whiteness and hardness, improves electrical properties, and alters the size and shape of the kaolin particles.

Imerys Kaolin enable a wide range of benefits for your final productswhich ensure the most cost-effective formulation is delivered without compromising the quality of your compound.
PRECISION PROCESSINGAt state-of-the-art plants crude ore is engineered to carefully controlledspecifications such as particle size, specific surface area, colour and pH.The unique nature of our deposits and processes gives precise functionalproperties when selected for specific applications.
QUALITY CONTROL Imerys Kaolin has developed a sophisticated method of analysing andbenchmarking its minerals based upon standard and customised tests. Our quality management systems are ISO 9001 certified and, throughour individual team activities, we use carefully controlled processes toensure the product is always consistent and our aim is to remain theleader in quality in our industry.
ADDING VALUE THROUGH RESEARCHOur experienced scientists and engineers work closely with our customers’ plant and production managers as technology and rubberformulations evolve, so we can offer problem solving advice for increasing productivity or improving product quality utilising existing grades, innovative solutions or customised new product development. Our application development laboratories conduct basicand applied research, product development, process improvement andpilot plant operations.
ENVIRONMENTALImerys Kaolin is committed to being a good neighbour to our environment and we take this responsibility very seriously. We haveadopted the principles of sustainable development, which includesextensive safety training programs and considerable investment inenvironmental rehabilitation to protect the land for future generations.
