LAKE WALES | In its heyday, Lincoln Avenue in
northwest Lake Wales pulsed with commerce. Shoppers
crowded its stores, teenagers sipped milk shakes at its
soda fountains and on Saturday nights, the street came
alive with music.
"Lincoln Avenue was a total mosaic of people,
and there were so many things to do," said Lake Wales
native Albert Hawkins Jr.
For lifelong friends Clinton Horne, Jerome
Mack and Hawkins, now into their 70s and beyond,
recalling that long-ago time in their Lake Wales
neighborhood sparked an avalanche of memories.
It was the 1950s, a time of malt shops and
poodle skirts, of Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis.
Lincoln Avenue, a stub of a street through the
heart of the city's predominantly black community,
teemed with activity, and neighborhood pride soared
each time the powerhouse Roosevelt High School
football team took to the gridiron.
It also was a time of racial segregation, but that
posed little problem for those in the northwest Lake
Wales neighborhood, Horne, 79, said.
"Everyone was content in their own
neighborhoods back then," he said. "There was no
unrest. We were a close-knit community, and even when
we crossed racial lines, there was harmony."
Along Lincoln Avenue, which was the
neighborhood's only paved roadway, places like Ellis
Drug Store, Ozella's Pie Shop and Lee's Men's Shop
thrived.
"As teenagers, we hung out at the patio café
next to Parker's Grocery," said Hawkins, 76. "There
were always people out on the street back then,
everywhere you looked. It's sad to look down this street
now and think of how it used to be."
Most of those buildings are gone down, victims
of time and neglect.
"It was such a different time then," Horne said.
"This street was lined with buildings, without much
space between them. I can't tell you how many families
made their living from the businesses along Lincoln
Avenue."
They worked, and they worshipped.
"Churches were a key to this community," said
Mack, 81. "They were its soul. I actually counted them
once. There were 32, just in this community."
And then there was Saturday.
"That was the party night," Mack said.
"It was a spillover from the Friday night football
games," Horne said.
On the gridiron, Mack and Horne donned the
green and gold of nearby Roosevelt High School, where
the city's black students attended school. During
halftime, Hawkins took to the same field with his
trombone.
And when the last play ended, the celebration
shifted to Lincoln Avenue.
"We'd go to Ellis Drug Store and get ice cream
and milk shakes," Hawkins said, "and we'd meet girls. I
played my share of pool on Lincoln Avenue, too."
"Yeah," Horne laughed, "sometimes we'd
migrate to the bars and get thrown out."
Come spring, the community's focus turned to
May Day.
"The May Day festival was a huge celebration,"
Hawkins said. "We had the Maypole dance, but it was
more than just that. Each school had its own festival,
with carnival rides and food and games.
Amid the good times and parties simmered an
underlying obligation among the youth of the Lincoln
Avenue neighborhood.
"People in that community would make
sacrifices for their children to go to school and get a
good education," Hawkins said. "We took advantage of
opportunities and were motivated by people who told us
to be something and to do something. It was part of our
culture."
Among Roosevelt's 30 graduates in the class of
1956, 18 graduated from college and eight went on to
receive master's degrees, including Hawkins and Horne.
Mack, a retired school administrator in Polk County,
also stands among those in the class of 1951 who hold
advanced degrees.
Horne served 30 years as the manager of
internal auditing at New York University before
returning to Lake Wales in 1994.
Hawkins, who spent 36 years teaching and in
school administration in New Jersey, said he never
doubted he would go to college.
"My dad knew that if I had a degree, I wouldn't
have to pick fruit," he said. "It was never a question."
In their retirement, the three friends have
actively pursued efforts to revitalize the community
where they grew up, but the challenges have been
daunting.
"When the older people started dying out, the
younger people weren't staying here to keep the property
up," Horne said. "They didn't see a reason to stay, and
the property started to deteriorate. A lot of the buildings
got to the point where the city was condemning them."
"They used to have everything you could think
of on this street," Hawkins said. "It would be nice to see
that again someday."
