Green Run High School Innovation LabMISSION: TO HELP OUR ST UDENT S FIG UR E OUT WHO T HEY A R E A ND WHAT T HE IR PUR PO SE IN L IFE SHO UL D B E

Who inspired us to “try” to innovate?

And let us not forget our former teachers, who never wrote any books but stayed in the classroom giving all they had with an audience of 5 or 12 or sometimes even 40…

How will we use our time together today?

Part 1 (40 minutes): We hope to share our iLab story with you…

Vision, Structures, Practices, Successes and Strengths, Failures~ Areas in Need of Improvement, and Our Future

Part 2 (10 minutes): BRAIN BREAK: We are big believers in FINNishing Strong (4o minutes on, 10 minutes off)

Part 3 (20 minutes): Various Choice Stations~1. Speak with iLabStudents 2. Go through a day to day visual account of the iLabthrough our Twitter feed 3. Analyze our data (discipline, attendance, academic progress)

What is the Green Run High School Innovation Lab (iLab)?

• It is an experiment in PUBLIC educational reform and democracy.

• We have no filters, no applications, no interviews…we take any student zoned for our high school and we build our curriculum organically each week around student and teacher passions.

• Green Run High School and the Innovation Lab classes are populated with students from very diverse backgrounds. The demographics in the GRHS iLab reflect the overall demographics of the school. There is a large contingency of military families as well as a large percentage of African-American students. Of our iLab students, 19 % come from families connected to the U.S. Armed Services. 51% of the iLab students are African-Americans, 16% are Hispanic, 2% are Asian, 4% are Multiple Ethnicities, and 27% are Caucasian.

Core Values and Beliefs of the GRHS iLab(Created by Teachers and Students)

•We take students, the things they love, and their natural abilities seriously and aim to build learning around student passions everyday.

•We believe in intrinsic motivation and rigorous self-analysis.

•We believe learning should be as fun as humanly possible.

Core Values and Beliefs of the GRHS iLab(Created by Teachers and Students)

•We believe in creating and maintaining a positive and safe learning environment with uplifting peer and teacher relationships.

•We believe failure can be a crucial step on the road to success and we aim to fail forward

•We believe social and emotional learning and developing personal ethics are as important as academic training.

What do we REALLY believe in?

“If we aren’t having fun, we must be doing something

wrong!”

EXPEDITIONARY LEARNING

“MUST WE ALWAYS TEACH OUR CHILDREN WITH BOOKS? LET THEM LOOK AT THE MOUNTAINS AND THE STARS UP ABOVE. LET THEM LOOK AT THE BEAUTY OF THE WATERS AND THE TREES AND FLOWERS ON EARTH. THEY WILL THEN BEGIN TO THINK, AND TO THINK IS THE BEGINNING OF A REAL EDUCATION.” -DAVID POLIS

SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING/PERSONALIZED LEARNING“THE PERSONALIZATION OF LEARNING IS NOT JUST PRETENDING KIDS HAVE CHOICES IN WHAT THEY ARE GOING TO LEARN. RATHER, IT IS BUILDING ENVIRONMENTS IN WHICH TEACHERS HAVE THE TIME AND SKILL TO KNOW THEIR STUDENTS AND CAN ADJUST THE PACE, THE MATERIALS, AND THE SURROUNDINGS SO THEY CAN MEET THE NEEDS OF ALL LEARNERS.” - GEORGE WOOD

Social and Emotional Learning

Lessons in Life, Lessons from the Lives of Others, and Non-Cognitive Skills

• Calculated Risk Taking: Get Out of Your Comfort Zone!

• Goal Setting: Be Smart, Be Courageous (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Timely)

• Digital Citizenship and Digital Literacy: Be Internet Awesome (Google) and Share with Care!

• Get Unstuck: Your Past and Your Family’s Past Don’t Have to be Your Future

• Empathy: Put Yourself in Someone Else’s Shoes

• Curiosity: There’s No Place Like Home, But Sometimes You “Gotta” Roam!
