Parks for PeopleThe Urban Parks Programme was launched with £50m by the Heritage Lottery Fund in 1996.
Delivered in partnership with the Big Lottery Fund since 2006, the Parks for People Programme has invested £648m in restoring over 700 public parks across the UK.
At the Public Parks Summit, it was announced that a further £100m would be invested jointly by the partners over the next three years.
Green Flag announcementKeep Britain Tidy awarded the licence to run the Green Flag Award scheme through to 2017.
This will be supported by other key partners including:
• GreenSpace supporting training and international expansion
• National Housing Federation supporting the expansion of the Award into affordable housing sector
• Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens leading on delivering the Green Flag Community Award

Key achievements 2010 - 2012
• Increased applications from 951 to 1,517: + 59%
• 1,424 winners in 2012: + 67%• Green Flag Community Award Winners
more than doubled from 73 to 175.• Increased the number of volunteer judges
by more than 250 – to over 800
Developments and Innovation
• A new group application process for 20 Local Authorities with multiple sites taking part in the scheme
• New training courses for judges• Mystery shopper programme• Peoples’ Choice award• Worked with partners in Germany,
Australia and New Zealand to pilot the award
Why is Green Flag Award Important
• To encourage provision of good quality public parks and green spaces
• Providing a national quality standard• Public to recognition and celebration
great parks and green spaces• Vehicle for advocating the benefits and
importance of high quality green spaces• Helps to protect funding
Licence to 2017
• DCLG have licensed Keep Britain Tidy to deliver the Scheme in the UK
• Licence is for 5 years• We will work with partners to deliver the
scheme in other UK countries• International licences will be agreed
with a relevant organisation in each country
The challenge
• Maintain the integrity of the scheme• Continue to invest in the development of
judges• Increase the number of winners• Ensure more people have access to
quality parks and green spaces• More people have access to quality
green spaces within 5 minutes walk from where they live and work
