They may include t h e very man you've been seeking:

According t o The Handbook of Texas ( a r t i c l e s "Minutemen, "Se- cession i n Texas, t' and "Texas Rangers") , t he Congress of the Repub- l i c of Texas on 3 Feb 1841 authorized the formation of companies of volunteer Minutemen [sometimes ca l l ed ranging companies, later Texas Rangers] " to give protect ion from Indian a t tacks on the c e n t r a l and southern f r o n t i e r a

When Texas joined the Union, U.S. troops w e r e s en t t o perform t h a t task , but many Texans w e r e not sat isf ied with the mild policy o r ineff ic iency of such t roops, so small companies of Texans, author- ized by the Governor, w e r e s t r a t e g i c a l l y deployed on occasion.

On 7 Feb 1861, the Texas Legis la ture passed a l a w permitt ing every f r o n t i e r county t o raise one o r more companies of minutemen f o r f r o n t i e r protect ion, By the t i m e Texas had r a t i f i e d t h e con- s t i t u t i o n of t he Confederacy i n March 1861, "State troops had a l - ready demanded the surrender of United S ta t e s posts i n Texas , 'I an ac t ion t h a t these men may w e l l have par t ic ipa ted i n .

None of these men "made ' i t" i n t o the pages of the Handbook, and very l i k e l y most w e r e too young t o be heads of households on the 1850 censusp but no doubt many made t h e i r mark as rangers and/ o r as so ld ie rs i n the Confederate States Army later.
