Yellowstone National Park
Yellowstone National Park
Yellowstone National Park is the world’s first national park, created by an act of Congress in 1872. The park contains the largest concentration of geo-thermal features in the world, as well as the largest Bison and Elk herds in the world.
The park is surrounded by six national forests. This 18 million-acre land mass is the last intact ecosystem left in the world.
Yellowstone experiences over 3 million visitors annually. This equates to over one million vehicles entering into the park every year.
Yellowstone experiences over 2,000 earthquakes every year.
Uniqueness of the park:
In 1916, the first automobiles entered the park…
Yellowstone’s Environmental Program Today:
We are addressing the critical importance of preserving and protecting this national treasure through:
-- Use of biodiesel in all vehicles-- Biobased cleaning and janitorial products-- Biobased lubricants/solvents-- Renewable energy successes-- Water-conservation initiatives-- Green procurement programs-- Green transportation
Major Commodities Collected
(tons)
2009• Aluminum/steel 14.1• Cardboard 269.5• Electronics 13.2• Glass 117.8• Paper 86.4• Plastics 41.2• Tires 250
Beginning in 2009, concessions operations are collecting and reusing all used cooking oil generated
in the park (est. 11,000 gal/annually).
