Haiku

What is a haiku?

• Short Japanese poetic form

• 3 lines of five, seven, and five syllables in the original

Japanese

• Kigo= a seasonal word such as “snow” or “cherry

blossoms” that indicates the time of year being

described.

A Contrast

• Most haiku present a comparison or

contrast of two images, actions, or states of

being.

Hollyhocks

Clouds come from time to time…

Cuckoo

Seven sights were veiled in mist…

Summer grasses…

Straw cape, umbrella…

This is a sedan, in China. Only pic I could find!

A man lives here– smoke through the wall…

Soaking on the roof/ A child’s rag ball

Beautiful, seen through holes made in a paper screen… The Milky Way

Far off mountain peaks…eyes of the dragonfly

A world of dew…within the dewdrops—quarrels.

Gazing at the far hills: a tiny frog.
