Halloween

Origins and Traditions

Origins

⎞ Halloween began two thousand years ago inIreland, England, and Northern France withthe ancient religion of the Celts (Paganism).

They celebrated their NewYear on November 1st.

⎞ This day marked the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was oftenassociated with human death.

Samhain (sow-in)

⎞ On the night of October 31, they celebratedSamhain, when it was believed that theghosts of the dead returned to earth.

Costumes

⎞ People thought that they would encounterghosts if they left their homes…

So they wore costumes.

⎞ This way, the ghosts couldn’t recognize them!

Trick-or-treating began withthe poor in the 15th century…

⎞ During the All Souls Day festival in England, poorpeople would beg for “soul cakes,” made out ofsquare pieces of bread with currants

⎞ Families would give soul cakes in return for apromise to pray for the family’s relatives

then children…

⎞ The practice, which wasreferred to as "going a-souling" was eventuallytaken up by childrenwho would visit thehouses in theirneighborhood and begiven ale, food, andmoney.

Today:

⎞ Children still go from house-to-house, butinstead of ale, food, and money, they getcandy.

With Irish Immigration…

⎞ In 1848, millions of Irish emigrants pouredinto America as a result of the potato famine. They brought with them their traditions ofHalloween.

Halloween came to America.

⎞ They called Halloween Oidche Shamhna(`Night of Samhain'), as their ancestors had,and kept the traditional observances.

The Jack-O-Lantern

⎞ The Irish used to carry turnips with candles inthem to light their way at night and to scareaway ghosts..

When they arrived in America they foundthat pumpkins were both plentiful and easierto carve than turnips.

Now, Jack-O-Lanterns are usedfor decorating people’s homes.

People have recently started carvingless traditional Jack-O-Lanterns

If you don’t give candy to atrick-or-treater…

This could happen to you!
