Schools Prepare toEmbrace Handball

HUNDREDS of schools and colleges across thecountry are preparing to welcome handball onto theircurriculum as part of the Change4Life programme.

The scheme - set up to help ourkids to get fit and stay fit - will seehandball developed in around420 secondary schools andcolleges, and it is hoped many ofthese will then become fullyestablished handball clubs forthe future. As part of the roll-out of thescheme, England Handball islooking to recruit eight new staffto ensure the sport is given thebest possible start at this crucialphase of the plan. “Without doubt, this is themost exciting developmentopportunity which the EHA hasever had,” said EnglandHandball’s Director ofDevelopment Louaz Hofton. “The Change4Lifeprogramme will involvedeveloping handball in 420secondary schools and colleges

across the country. Although this isonly funded for one year, thosestudent clubs will be supported bythe Change4Life staff to becomeestablished recreational handballclubs from September 2011onwards.

Exciting England Handball are recruitingsix part time Activators and twopart time Managers to bestrategically placed around thecountry to ensure the spread ofthe game is as effective as possible. With the North West and Londoncurrently hotspots for handball inEngland, it is hoped that otherregions will also embrace the sportand, through schemes such asChange4Life, help make the sportwidely known.

Olympic Officials: TheTraining Starts Here!

PREPARATIONS are well underway for the first National TechnicalOfficials (NTOs) meeting to bestaged in Nottingham onSeptember 4/5 - and if you’replanning to go along you need toconfirm your attendance by thisFriday, August 20. The meeting is the first of severalbeing staged around the countryby Olympic Handball CompetitionManager Alex Gavrilovic, with theaim of building a team of Britishofficials for the 2012 Olympics inLondon. The first session is on September4 from 12-3pm, and is anintroductory NTO (Statistician)training session. Then from 3-6pm,there is an introductory NTO (TableOfficial) training session.

This session for budding tableofficials will be repeated thefollowing morning, SundaySeptember 5, from 10-12. Sunday also sees the traditionalNottingham Pre-SeasonTournament take place from 10am-7pm, which will include eightteams, 16 matches, and a greatchance to see some top domestichandball action. The workshops will includetheory and simulated practicalopportunities, and in additionparticipants will officiate and/orshadow officials at theTournament on Sunday. PLAYERS eligible to play for Englandare invited to attend a training campin preparation for the Home NationsFour Team Tournament in Scotland inOctober. The event will be held on a date tobe announced, and clubs are beingasked to nominate players they feelare good enough to make the grade. Players must be registered andtraining with a competitive club and

playing regularly at a minimum of EHANational League First Division level,and you should be able to commit toall the dates in the programme. Scottish Refs CourseIF you are a budding handballreferee and live in Scotland, thenthere is also a course for you! The Scottish HandballAssociation is staging a trainingcourse on September 18-19, at avenue to be confirmed.
