LassenCommunityCollegecurrentlyprovidesstudentstheopportunitytotakeclassesonline.Youhavereceivedthishandbookbecauseyouarescheduledtoteachoneormoresectionsofonlinecoursesorareusingonlinedeliveryaspartofahybridclass.Welcome!Asaninstructorteaching online, you play a vital role in providing instruction to students throughout LassenCounty,California,andtheUnitedStates.Whileyoumaynotbeteachingface-to-faceinaclassroom,youmustworktoensurethatyouronlineclassmatchestherigorandacademicstandardsofatraditionalface-to-facecourse.Youronlinecoursemustalsomeetlocal,state,andfederalguidelinesforonlineeducation.Thishandbook isdesignedtomakeyouawareofonline-specific issuesandregulations,guideyou through the process of developing your course, and make you aware of the resourcesavailableoncampustomakethetransitiontoonlineinstructiongoassmoothlyaspossible.SeeAttachmentAforimportantcontactnumbers.

GETTING STARTED LassenCommunityCollegeusesCanvasasitsonlinelearningmanagementsystem(LMS)platform.CanvasGuidescanassistinstructorsindesigningtheironlinecoursethroughtheCanvaswebsite.AccesstheseguidesfromthisURL:(https://community.canvaslms.com/community/answers/guides/)orbygoingtoCanvasandaccessingtheguidesthroughthehelpfeatureontheleftmarginofthemainpage.Yourdivisionchaircanreferyoutootherfacultywhoteachonlineforonlineteachingstrategyinformationorsuggestions.OurInstructionalDesignerisalsoavailabletoprovideyouwithassistance.Additionally,grouptrainingsforCanvasareperiodicallyofferedintheTraining,Education,andCollaborationCenter(TECC)atLassenCollege.Newinstructorsareencouragedtoviewotheronlinecourses.Seeingothercourses,eveninsubjectareasdifferentthanyourown,maygiveyousomeideasabouthowtostructureyouronlinecourse.Keepinmind,though,thatyoumaynotuseanymaterialfromanotherinstructorwithoutpermission.Asyougetstartedcreatinganonlinelearningenvironmentforyourstudents,youneedtobeaware of Lassen College’s own online course requirements as well as state and federalaccessibility guidelines. Both the local course requirements and accessibility guidelines arebasedonstateandfederalregulations.

Requirements for Online Classes and Materials AtLassenCollege,allonlinecoursesmustutilizeaCanvasshellandincludethefollowingcomponentsorinformationasevidenceofregulareffectivecontact:

• Weeklystudent-to-studentinteractionviadiscussionforums.Youareexpectedtofacilitateweeklyinteractionbetweenstudentsbycreatingopportunitiesfordialoganddiscussion.Itisrecommendedthatyoumakeforumparticipationarequirementratherthanachoiceinyourclassandexpectstudentstosubmittheirowninitialpoststoeachforumaswellaspostsrespondingtoclassmates.Youmightconsideraminimumwordcountforinitialandresponseposts.

• Weeklyinstructor-to-student(group)contactThismaybedemonstratedviaregularnewsforumposts,announcementsorlectureinformationthatincludesclarifyinginformationinresponsetostudentquestionsoroverallclassperformance(i.e.clarifyingaconceptthatmayhavebeenuncleartheweekpriorbasedonindividualquizscores).Regularfacultyparticipationwithinweeklyforumsalsoisevidenceofinstructor-to-student(group)contact.Instructorsdon’tneedtorespondtoeverystudentpost,buttheremustbeevidenceoffacultyinteraction,anditmustberegularandtimely.

• Weeklyinstructor-to-student(individual)contactYoumusthavecontactwithindividualstudentseachweek–check-inassignmentsthatpromotestudentquestionsorassessperspectivestowardstheclassorthematerialaretwowaystoofferstudentsanopportunityforquestionsandtoprovideindividualfeedbacksimilartotalkingtoastudentandansweringquestionsbeforeorafteraface-to-faceclass.Instructorsshouldalwaysbeprovidingfeedbackonassignments.AnotherwaytoprovideindividualcommentsandfeedbackiswithemailforindividualstudentsgeneratedwithinCanvasusingtheCanvasEmailfunction.WhileitisinevitablethatstudentswillemailfacultymembersoutsideofCanvas,itisimportantthatadditionalregularfeedbackandindividualinteractionoccurwithinCanvasbecausetheevidenceofregular,effectiveinteractioniseasilyaccessibletooutsideevaluators.Ifexternalemailisutilizedregularlyforweeklyinteractionwithindividualstudents,instructorsmustsaveallemailsforsubmissiontoAcademicServicesattheendofthesemesterasevidenceofregularandeffectivecontactbetweeninstructorsandstudents.

• Clearexplanationsofconceptscoveredandassignmentsduewithineachweek,topicorunit(i.e.aweeklytaskortodolistthatclarifiestostudentswhatisexpectedofthem).BesidesprovidingthelinktoCanvasactivitiesorresources,bestpracticessuggestyoushouldprovideachecklistorsimilaritemtohelpstudentsunderstandexactlywhatisexpectedofthemeachweek.Includealltasksforaweek–readings,forums,videos,accesstooutsideresources,assignments,quizzesorexams,andanythingelseastudent

needstododuringagivenweek.SeeAttachmentBforasampleofweeklystudentinformation.

• Weeklylecturesutilizinginstructor-generateddocumentsorfiles(Word,PowerPoint,Prezi,video).Externallinksandreferencesmayalsobeusedbutshouldnotbethestudents’solesourceofcourseandcontent-relatedinformation.LassenCollegeexpectsthatyouwillprovideyourownlectures,explanations,demonstrations,andinformation.Thiscanbedeliveredavarietyofways,butkeepinmindthatPowerpointslidesalonearenotsufficientbecausetheyoftenonlyhighlightkeywordsandphrasesratherthanprovidingcompleteexplanationsofaconcept.TypedlecturesareverycommonasarePowerPointwithnotes,videos,Preziwithembeddedaudioandmore.

• Materialsthatareaccessibletoallstudentsregardlessofdisability.Requirements for Syllabi – Online Classes Syllabiforonlineclasssectionsmustincludeinformationspecifictoonlinestudents,expectations,andcommunication.Allcoursesmusthaveasyllabus,andthismustbepostedwithinyourCanvasclassinadditiontobeingsubmittedtoAcademicServices.Thesyllabusisconsideredacontractbetweenstudentsandinstructors,sobesuretorelatespecificexpectationstostudents.Itisexpectedthatmaterialinthesyllabusisconsistentwithmaterialintheapprovedcourseoutline.SeeAttachmentCforasampleonlinesyllabus.Ifyouhaveadditionalquestionsaboutyourcoursesyllabus,contactyourdivisionchairorAcademicServices.(MovedfromSyllabussection,page10)[Seeonlinecoursesyllabuschecklist,AttachmentD]Accessibility Youronlinecoursemustbeaccessibletoallstudentsregardlessofwhetherornottheyhaveadisability.Thebestwaytodesignanaccessiblecourseistomakeitaccessibleasyoudevelopit;donotwaittofindoutwhetheryouhaveadisabledstudentsinceyourcoursemustbeaccessibleregardlessofwhetheradisabledstudentisenrolled.UtilizeUniversalDesignPrinciplestohelpcreateanaccessibleclassfromtheverybeginning.TheChancellor’sOfficealsoprovidesaccessibilityguidelineswithintheDEAG(DistanceEducationAccessibilityGuidelines)document.Belowisasummaryofkeyguidelines;completetextisavailableinTheCaliforniaCommunityCollegesChancellor’sOfficeDistanceEducationAccessibilityGuidelines(DEAG)forStudentswithDisabilities,whichisavailableathttp://extranet.cccco.edu/Portals/1/AA/DE/2011DistanceEducationAccessibilityGuidelines%20FINAL.pdf

Guidelinesforaccessibility:

• Studentsmusthaveanopportunitytolearn“anytime,anywhere”(12).Allcoursesshouldbedesignedtobeaccessiblebydisabledstudentsanytime,anywherewithouttheneedforoutsideassistanceorequipment.

• Assistancemustbebuiltintoacourse(i.e.closedcaption)andcompatiblewithindustrystandardassistivetechnologylikescreenreadersormagnifiers(12).

• Accesstodistanceeducationcoursesincludesaccesstoaudio,video,ortextcomponentsofacourseinadditiontocommunicationsdeliveredwithinacourse(13).

• Distanceeducationcoursesandmaterialsmustbe“designedanddeliveredinsuchawaythatthelevelofcommunicationandcourse-takingexperienceisthesameforstudentswithorwithoutdisabilities”(13).

• Allmaterials,whetherproducedbythecollegeoraccessedviaexternalresources,mustbeaccessible.

WithintheDEAGdocument,fourprinciplesareconveyedthatprovidethefoundationforWebaccessibility:perceivable,operable,understandable,androbust.AccordingtotheCCCCO2011DEAG,“TheGuidelinesandSuccessCriteriaareorganizedaroundthefollowingfourprinciples,whichlaythefoundationnecessaryforanyonetoaccessanduseWebcontent.AnyonewhowantstousetheWebmusthavecontentthatis:Perceivable

Informationanduserinterfacecomponentsmustbepresentabletousersinwaystheyhavetheabilitytocomprehend(itcan'tbeinvisibletoalloftheirsenses),e.g.:

Ifanyofthefourprinciplesarenotmet,userswithdisabilitieswillnotbeabletousetheWeb(6).Accessibility Recommendations Havinganunderstandingofgeneralphilosophiesandguidelinesforaccessibilityinonlineclassesisimportant,butnoteveryoneisawareofhowtheguidelinestranslatetoregularandeffectivepracticewithinonlineclasses.ThefollowingshouldbestandardpracticeswithinyouronlineclassaccordingtoAccessComputinghttps://www.washington.edu/accesscomputing/tips/:(AlsoseeAttachmentE)

• CaptionallvideoCaptionsbenefitallusers.YoucantranscribeyourowncaptioningusingYouTube,Camtasia,orotherfreeservices.

• ProvideatranscriptProvideatranscriptofallaudioorvideopresentationssothatuserswhoaredeaf-blindandthosewithlowInternetbandwidthcanaccessthemediacontent.Allusersbenefitbybeingabletoaccesscontentquickly.

• AddproperalttexttoimagesAlttextprovidesaccesstothecontentofanimageforthosewhocannotseetheimage,includingthoseusingscreenreaders.Itissupportedwithinmostdocumentauthoringtools(HTML,Word,andPDF).

• UseheadingsproperlyUseheadingsandsub-headingstoformanoutlineofthepagetohelpnon-visualuserstounderstandhowthepageisorganizedandmakeiteasyforscreenreaderuserstonavigate.UsingtemplatesorstylesinMicrosoftWordcanhelpyoutouseheadingsproperly

• CreateaccessiblePDFsTagcontentinPDFs,andtakestepstoensurethatthecontentwillbereadinthecorrectorder

Nowthatyouhavereceivedanonlineteachingassignmentandyouunderstandourexpectationsof“BestPractices,”it’stimetogetstarted.Thesefirstfewstepswillhelpyougetthecourseandtextbookinformationyouneedtobeginplanningyourinstruction.Allonlinecoursesmustbetaughtonthecollegeadoptedonlinelearningmanagementsystem(LMS)platform,currentlyCanvas,andmustmeetallofthestandardsaboveevenifpublisher-providedmodulesorotherexternalresourcesareutilizedforcoursedelivery.

Course Outline YoucanaccessyourcourseoutlinefromtheLCCwebpagethroughthesearchfunction.Allcoursesmustbetaughtaccordingtothecourseoutline.Althoughinstructorsmayemphasizedifferentpartsofthecoursecontentforacourse,allmaterialincludedinthecoursecontentsectionoftheoutlinemustbecovered.YoumaycontactAcademicServicestohaveacourseoutlineemailedtoyou.

Textbook Thetextbooksforeachcourseareselectedbythefull-timefacultyteachingthesubject.Whilethecourseoutlineincludesrepresentativetexts,includingthetextbookbeingusedforallsectionsofthecourse,itisbesttocontactyourdivisionchairorthebookstoretoconfirmthatthelistedtextisbeingusedforonlinesectionsofthecourseandtohelpyoucontactthepublishersoyoucanrequestinstructorcopies.Itisveryimportantthatyouconfirmthecurrenttextbookbeingusedsothatyoucancreateaclassthateffectivelyutilizesthetextbook.Thebookstorecanbereachedat530.251.8881.

Student Workload Asyoubegintoplanforyouronlinecourse,youneedtokeepinmindthattheinstructionofferedonlinemustbeequivalenttoatraditionalclassroomexperience.Mostofthecoursestaughtonlinearethree-unitlecturecourseswhich,whentaughtintheclassroom,mustbetaughtfor51hours.And,atthecollegeanduniversitylevel,foreveryhourstudentsspendinclass,theyareexpectedtospendapproximately2hoursdoingworkoutsideofclass(reading,homeworkassignments,andthelike).Althoughyourstudentsmaynotbesittinginclasswithyou,itisstillyourresponsibilityasanonlineinstructortoreplacethe51hoursofclassroomtimefora3unitcourse,and102hoursofoutsidetimewithanequalamountoftimeandwork.Planapproximately150hoursofcourse-relatedworkforyourstudentsfora3unitlecturecourse.Thetimerequirementsareconsistentwhetheryouareteachingaseventeen-weekcourseoraneight-weekcourse.Ifyouareteachingacoursethathaslaboractivityhoursincludedintheunitscomputation,thenyourweeklyhoursrequirementmaybedifferent.Ifyouareunsurewhetheryourcourseislectureorlaboracombinationofboth,pleaseseethecourseoutlineoraskyourdivisionchair.Alllecturehoursmustinclude2hoursadditionalout-of-classtimewhilelab/activityhoursdonothavetheadditionaloutsidehoursrequirement.
