The “bars” represent the Received Signal Strength Indication or RSSI.

Field Test option on an iPhone can be activated by dialing *3001#12345#* + “Call” changes the RSSI to a dB value.

Galaxy S5. Go to “settings”; “about device”; “status”; Signal strength is shown in units of “dBm” (Decibel-milliwatts)and “asu”(Arbitrary Strength Units)

What does 5 bars mean?

# of ‘Signal Strength Bars’ Numeric Range (approx.)

No Signal Greater than - 125dBm

1 to 4 -65 to -125 dBm

5 Less than -65 dBm

Note: 3 Signal Strength Bars = -100 dBm = 0.1 picowatt (pW)1 Signal Strength Bar = - 120dBm = 1 femtowatt (fW)calls completed in a weak signal area require up to 6 times asmuch power for call completion.

A cellular signal booster system consists of an external

antenna, a signal boosting amplifier and an internal antenna.Signal Boosters can significantly improve cellular device performance

Weak Signal ?– No Problem

A ground plane is a horizontal, flat, electrically conductive

metal surface used to reflect radio waves.

In antenna theory a ground plane must have a radius of at least ¼ wave length of the lowest frequency being transmitted. LTE band 12 uplink frequency range is 698 - 746 MHz . Therefore, the ground plane should have a radius of at least 4.023 inches

When a cellular signal booster external antenna lacks a ground plane it dramatically reduces both uplinked and downlinked signal strength.

Why do I need a Ground Plane?
