November . . . after all the colorful leaves have fallen it always seems a rather dreary month. But, it does signal the beginning of the holiday season with Thanksgiving!
I am so thankful for YOU, our Shipley Center traveler. You have trusted us to take you to places, both locally and afar, throughout the year. You have met new people, and enjoyed new adventures. As I write this article, twenty of our members are on their way to Iceland… I can’t wait to hear about their adventures!
Molbak’s Garden + Home: Get in the holiday spirit with a trip to Molbak’s, not only a nursery, but a holiday extravaganza! If this appeals to you, call immediately! It goes on 11/6.
December: There are only three trips planned for December, not including the annual Victoria Holiday, and the Santa Fe Holiday trip. I hope a number of you will be interested in Key City Public Theatre’s presentation of Every Christmas Story Ever Told in Port Townsend. A holiday play and dinner are always fun!
Cancellation Policy Change: As of Dec 1st,
the fee for a trip refund will increase to $10 per person. It is very time consuming to process refunds.
Looking to 2019: We have three big trips planned for 2019. Some 24 members are signed up for Scotland and Northern Ireland in March. We also have The Best of Eastern Canada planned for May, and two small groups cruising on the Rhine!
Help Protect Drivers and Fellow Bus Riders: If you are on one of our bus trips, and you have a hacking cough, you might be asked to wear a mask. Please do not be offended. It is not fair to expose others to the flu and colds. I will be sure to have masks on hand.
I wish you all a very happy Thanksgiving!
See you on the Shipley bus!
Key City Public Theatre, Port Townsend And Old Whiskey Mill Sunday, December 9
Sign up deadline: November 28!
We will leave Shipley Center at about 11:30 for the 1:00 performance of Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some)….On some evenings in December 2018 instead of performing Charles Dickens’ beloved holiday classic for the umpteenth time, three actors decide to perform every Christmas story ever told — plus Christmas traditions from around the world, seasonal icons from ancient times to topical pop-culture, and every carol ever sung. A fun change for the holiday season! By Michael Carleton, Jim Fitzgerald, and John Alvarez Directed by Denise Winter After the show, we will try out Old Whiskey Mill for an early dinner (on your own). Enjoy an afternoon out on the town! Hop on the bus and venture out on this little holiday excursion! Est return: 6:00 Call now! 360-683-5883 $46 for members, $50 for non members

SEQUIM COMMUNITY AID NEEDS HELP
Sequim Community Aid is a local charity formed 70 years ago to provide emergency assistance to families living in the Sequim school district. We help people that need assistance with rent and utility bills. All funds are paid directly to the landlords or the utility companies. We get our funds from grants, churches, businesses civic groups and individuals. We are looking for additional volunteers. Our volunteers take turns answering calls for help. We work from our homes using the Sequim Community Aid cell phone. You are trained first and then we team you up with a partner working 2 or 3 days about every 6 weeks. You can decide when you are available and sign up for that time. For more information please call: Kathy Suta, President at 425 765 8438. Thanks for helping us.

Michael’s Message
November Potpourri
By Michael Smith, Executive Director
As we welcome fall and the holiday season, I’d like to share a potpourri of facts, updates, and thoughts:
People DO read The Center News! A few examples of how I know: 1) Our very first buffet luncheon (instead of potluck) was a great success, with over 40 people enjoying a great meal
from our Café for just $4! Thank you to sponsor Jan from Dungeness Courte for the nice mugs and goodies! Next buffet is Tuesday November 20th. Call the office to reserve a spot! 2) Our new earlier opening time of 9am sharp means that more of you are enjoying breakfast at The Café! So far, 23 diners have filled out their “Proud Shipley Café Regular” cards, with a commitment of 100+ meals a month! Come in, like Board Treasurer Don Gerber did, and get your card; let’s fill up that wall AND fill up our tum-mies at OUR Café!
3) At least 2 people read my July article on the tax advantages of giving directly from your IRA using a QCD, or Qualified Charitable Distribution. Their IRA trustees, as their direction, sent in a combined $2,800 for our general fund. If you want to “get in on the tax savings” contact me or your IRA trustee about doing a “QCD”, perhaps with your “RMD” (Required Minimum Distribution) by the “EOY” (End of Year)!
Shopping Therapy is a Real Thing Get your shopping therapy “fix” at our Holiday Bazaar Nov 2 and 3, where you will find great gift items for those you love. This successful annual event is just full of festive fun. Food is available both days from The Café too! Try to shop locally as much as possible and support Sequim businesses and craftspeople that support your Center. If you do shop online using Amazon, be sure to replace “www” with “smile” as in smile.amazon.com and then choose “Sequim Senior Services” as your charity of choice. That way, every time you shop, your Center will get half a percent to help seniors who cannot afford a membership. When shopping, always look to see that we are listed at the top of the page as shown here:
Yes, we are still moving forward with plans to build the Health & Wellness Annex As they say, Rome wasn’t built in a day. We hope our project does not take as long as Rome did! We are still working on Civil and Structural engineering details, but getting closer and closer all the time. During November, as the engineers finish up, the landscape designer will be submitting her drawings. All of this is in preparation for applying for our City of Sequim building permit. Flooring samples have arrived and we are choosing the best flooring for the kitchen/classroom and a different flooring for the gym/fitness room. We want surfaces that will not be damaged by water, tables, chairs, bouncing balls, lively exercisers, etc. We also want it to be attractive, easy on those exercising knees, and safe. The kitchen layout is being designed with help from several experts in culinary education. I want to take this opportunity to thank one faithful donor who has very generously given $1,000 an amazing 5 times this year! With everyone’s help we will make this a reality and be enjoying our new Health & Wellness Annex in mid-late 2019.
Tote Bag for new MGM givers! Last month I mentioned our large quality canvas tote bag that new Members Giving Monthly donors receive when they sign up to give just $10 per month or more. (Existing MGM members can increase their donation by $10 per month to
get a tote bag too!) I thought you’d like to see a photo of it. They are very handy. Some of our exercisers use them to carry their towel, hand weights and water bottle. Some of our crafters use them to hold yarn and their latest projects, and readers use them for books and more! Please consider adding your name at $10, $25, $30, $50, $100 or some other monthly amount to our growing list of sustaining donors in our MGM club! See me any time to set it up.
Thanks Giving At this time of year, I would like to express my sincere THANKS to all of you who support Shipley Center in whatever way you can. Those who volunteer in any way; those who contribute something extra . . . and just all of you who help to make Shipley Center the great place it is! Happy Thanksgiving!
Michael

BECOME AN IRS-CERTIFIED
TAX-AIDE VOLUNTEER!
Are you good with numbers and good with people? Then consider becoming an IRS-certified TAX-AIDE volunteer! Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are welcome!
The TAX-AIDE program is sponsored by the IRS and the AARP Foundation. You don’t need to be an AARP member or retiree to volunteer, or to receive free tax preparation-services from TAX-AIDE.
Training begins in December. All volun-teers do an extensive amount of self-study, us-ing training materials and software provided by the IRS. They must attend training classes and pass the IRS Test before providing tax assis-tance for low- and middle-income members of our community. New volunteers work with ex-perienced volunteers at several sites in our community.
Gail Anundson, who has been a TAX-AIDE volunteer for many years at the Shipley Center, says she continues to volunteer year after year, “Because the taxpayers are SO ap-preciative of the TAX-AIDE program. The tax-payers and the other volunteers are a real joy to work with.”
Join our crew of dedicated TAX-AIDE volunteers.
You’ll work your mind and warm your heart!
Please contact www.aarp.org/taxaide to com-plete an online application. Once your applica-tion is processed, Mike Schneider, our Local Coordinator, will be in touch with you. If you have questions, contact Mike at:
mschnei834@yahoo.com. You’ll need to sign up by Thanksgiving to be-come IRS-certified in time for the coming tax season.

Ray Bentsen needs no introduction to many of you. A board member for several years, and president for two, he has been the hard-working chairman of Shipley Center’s annual Benefit Sale for many years. Under his leadership, this year’s total exceeded $26,000. Yay, Ray!
One day when I was working at the sale site, Ray showed me a creative wood plate he was working on in a process called wood chipping. I was intrigued with the intricacy of the design and what appeared to be the intense concentration required to carve such a piece using only a half-inch blade. I thought many of our members would be interested in learning about this new—at least to me—pastime.
1. This is the beginning, the 10” diameter basswood plate blank, as purchased from Bill Johnson at www.carolinamountainreefs.com. The pattern on the plate consists of 32 overlapping and carefully drawn circles. (If you want to see some gorgeous woodwork, do go to that web-site. It is impressive!)
2. Here you see the carving in progress with most chips already cut out, but still showing some of the penciled pattern. Note that Ray decided to deviate from the printed pattern at the center, sanding off the pattern as he goes along.
3. This photo shows the plate with all chips removed. As you might expect, carving out the individual chips takes some time and patience . . . all the while being careful to carve deep enough—but not too deep—and at a uniform angle.
4. Here is the finished plate after staining. Ray chooses to sand off the top surface to add contrast with the chips. The plate gives the optical illusion that the plate is not flat, but 3D . . . and the viewer experiences a sensation of movement. I will leave you with Ray’s answer to the inevitable question regarding the amount of time involved to carve just one
creation: “Don’t ask how long it takes to finish a plate, since most carving is done in my recliner while also watching TV!” Do any of YOU have an interesting hobby that could be featured in an upcoming Spotlight article? Let Margaret Cox know.
