OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
• To analyze the status of tourism in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand.• To identify the socio economic
activities in the Kumaon region.• Classification of socio economics activities that are practiced in the region.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY• It is explorative research. • Wide range of data was collected through secondary
sources mainly from Directorate of Tourism, Dehradun.• Similarly, data were also collected from the Kumaon
Mandal Vikas Nigam,(KMVN), Nainital.• Qualitative data were also collected by interviewing
tourists,locals and Officials of K.M.V.N.• Mean value of Interest Shown In Percentage was
calculated.• References from research papers, books, articles and
newspapers were taken appropriately for interpretation of data.

Handicrafts AIPANAipan is one of the traditional art (painting form) of Kumaon.
It has great social, cultural and religious significance.

Copper Crafts
Handlooms woolen crafts were Produced mainly for local consumption. In the rural and border areas, wool extracted from animals like sheep is used to make products like kaaleen, pankhi and thulma (thick blanket).
Johar-Munisiyari in Pithoragarh district is famous for producing woolen carpets and thulma. Almora has been producing its famous tweeds, woolen carpets and artistic woolen shawls. The other places where this craft has been practiced are Bageshwar,
Nainital,
Artistic candles. Decorative candles in beautiful shapes and sizes have emerged as the most popular souvenirs of Nainital. Although ordinary candles have always existed as a cottage industry, decorative candles from Naintal started showing up in the marker in the early 70’s. Encouraged by the warm response shown by the market, the started producing new designs as per the market preference
LOCAL FOOD PRODUCTS
Many NGO’s like Avani, Fruitage, Umang, Himadri and Himjoli are making food products from these food products like jelly, jam, achaar,candies
Locals are also producing many kinds of herbs with the help of state government and NGO’s .Gadrayani, rosemary, thyme, eucalyptus oil and oregano are few names
Buraansh which is beneficial for the heart. It grows in hilly area of Kumaon from which juice is being extracted thus giving employment to many locals
resulting in revenue generation for the state.
Culture: Can be seen as way of enhancing resources for tourism
Kumaoni ladies in traditional dress
Traditionally Dressed Women
Rang Ladies :. They live in high altitude places of Kumaon (Pithoragarh).During Kangdali festival they decorate themselves with traditional dress and jewelry.
Intricately carved designs Houses - of floral patterns, deities and geometrical motifs- also decorate the doors, windows, ceilings and walls of village houses.
The region is full of ethnic cuisine which can be used to promote Tourism here.
Folk songs and Dances
Deeply rooted in the Kumaoni culture. Lok dhun/music is popular during celebrations and festivals.The main categories of folk songs in kumauni are Shakunakhar , Rituraina , Hudkiabaul , Jagar ,Malushahi ,Mangal Geet
Fairs & Festival: These festivals plays a vital part in the promotion of the handicrafts and tourism in Kumaon attracting tourists.

PILGRIMS: This region was mainly ruled by The Katyuri and Chand dynasties
and built many construct different temples in this region. Some of them are very famous and attracts lot of tourists

Conclusion
• Socio Economic conditions enhancing the socio-economic development of a region which can further help in eradicating poverty from the Kumaon region.
• By highlighting the socio-economic activities , it can help in attracting large number of domestic and foreign tourists.
• Culture plays an important role in the economic development of locals and the host destinations. Smaller fair and festivals generally produce most economic benefits.
• Encouragement from the State Government and NGO’s in the form of adequate vocational training, self employment schemes, easy finance, proper infrastructure as well as marketing are required to promote these socio economic activities which can thus result in responsible tourism.
• Locals should be involved in decision making.• Proper Infrastructure and public utilities facilities.
