HAVERSTRAW KING’S DAUGHTERS
PUBLIC LIBRARY Excellence in Service Since 1895
A Note From the Director
Are You a Library Champion? Every winter library folks from around the state head to Albany to advocate for state funding of libraries of all kinds.
We love to share stories with our legislators of how the library has changed people’s lives. If you’ve got a great story
to tell about how important HKDPL is to you and your family, please email us at information@hkdpl.org. And let us
know if you want to add your voice in person when we go north on Tuesday, February 25, 2020.
Sustainability
2020 marks the 125th anniversary of HKDPL. Society has changed a lot and we want to help lead the way in
Haverstraw to ensure that we’re here for another 125. Reducing energy consumption by installing solar panels and
instituting a recycling program are only part of the picture. We’ll be implementing shifts in all areas of our business
so that our actions incorporate practices that are environmentally sound AND economically feasible AND socially
equitable. Our intention is to be certified as a Sustainable Library by the New York Library Association, and continue
to support a Haverstraw that is thriving and able to bounce back from disruption.
Welcome to Erin & Janis
Please join me in welcoming Erin P. and Janis K. to our HDKPL family! Erin is our new
librarian in Adult Services and will be happy to find your next favorite read or connect
you to the resources you need. Janis works in our Technical Services department, which
means she’s responsible for getting our new materials shelf-ready for you to discover.
A Fond Farewell
We're very sad to announce that after 14 years on our team, librarian Rio A. is leaving to take a Teen
Librarian position at a public library in Westchester. Rio started as an Information Services Assistant
and then went on to achieve her Master's degree in Library & Information Science. We wish her all the
best and hope she comes back to visit!
Service Recognition
We are so very lucky to have a dedicated team of people who are committed to the Library and to you, our
community. I’d like to take this opportunity to recognize those team members whose anniversaries occur during
November and December: Victor C., 3 years; Priscilla H., 13 years; Alice K., 2 years; Anne S., 14 years; Tim T., 2 years;
Sajan T., 2 years in August; and Charlotte V., 41 years. That is 77 years of service to this institution and to the
community. If you see any of these folks around, please join me in congratulating them! This recognition of team
members is a regular feature in our newsletter.
See you in the stacks!
Claudia Depkin, Library Director

Association. In this section we want to keep you updated with various steps that we
will take through the process and share some green tips that we share with all our
staff. So far we have:
