Dear Families, Red Balloon Day It was a privilege to host the fire brigade at Nathalia
Primary School on Friday. We had students from
Nathalia Secondary College, St Mary’s , St Francis, the
kindergarten and Glenvale all joining together in a sea
of red to support the work done by our local fire
brigade.
This sent a strong message of “community” to
our students. The Fireys’ then demonstrated
equipment and this showed students an example of
teamwork. In our classes we are continuing to work
with students on the importance of being a team and
getting along in your team and providing strategies for
getting along. One strategy that is being put to use is
“keeping the incident in perspective”; students have
done this using a catastrophe scale.
Combined Pool Fun Day
For grades 3 - 6 the afternoon was spend
sharing a fun day with St Francis.
I took an activity and it was lovely to see the
interactions of students with children they knew and
new friends that they made on the day. The students
rotated around 14 activities some staffed by our
teachers, St Francis teachers and our parent helpers.
We will continue to plan activities with St.
Francis and this is strengthening the bonds between
the two schools. The Foundation – Grade 2 students
will join with St Francis students in a fun water
afternoon on March 20th.
Visiting Author
On the 20th March St. Francis have invited us to
join them to listen to a visiting author. He is a joke
teller that has a message around bullying.

Head Lice Alert
There have been reports made
to the school by a number of parents
that their children are continually
contracting head lice.
To endeavour to clear this
outbreak up we ask that all families
check their child’s hair as soon as
possible, treat where necessary and
continue to be vigilant over the next
few weeks.

R eport from The Grade 5/6 Canberra Camp
The campers have all been learning lots of
new things about Canberra, democracy and the
parliamentary system. We had some students dress
up as the speaker, sergeant at arms and act out a
debate on TV ads.
We visited Sharman Stone in her office.
The mint was a favourite with lots of
students buying an ANZAC coin. All our guides have
been wonderful with lots of jokes. We visited Old
Parliament House and sat in the Senate seats.
The students have represented Nathalia
Primary School very well with their informed
answers, thoughtful questions and wonderful
behaviour.
Lots more to see and do for the next two
days. The kids are looking forward to Questacon
tomorrow. We had 9 holes in one tonight at mini
golf. I think that must be a record!

Grade 5/6 Canberra Trip
On Monday morning I waved the grade
5/6’s off as they headed to Canberra. The purpose
of the camp is to give students first hand
experience of our national capital and some of the
iconic institutions that are in Canberra. The
students are visiting the National Capital Planning
Centre, Parliament House, The Royal Mint, National
Museum, National Gallery, Questacon, The War
Memorial and the AIS then heading back to
Nathalia.
They will build on these experiences back
at school with follow up project work in particularly
looking at our government structures. I would like
to thank Hannah Routledge, Deb Inglis, Alana
Zammit and Sam Paige for taking the students.
Professional Development
On Tuesday the staff joined with the other
schools in our cluster (Nathalia SC, St. Mary’s and
St Francis) to participate in a Professional
Development day.
The speaker for the day was Glenn
Pearsall. His message was “how we use feedback
and questioning to engage our students” and then
use this information to improve our teaching and
learning.
This work aligns with our strategic plan of
engagement and building higher expectations.
Student Behaviour Management
At the last staff meeting we discussed
behaviour management and felt that our current
policy document was complex and hard to follow so
we have simplified the document.
All staff will be following the 3 steps of
decisive discipline: Preventative action, Corrective
action and Support action. See attached
documentation on Page 6. Personally I have found
the broken record approach quite successful.
Principal Selection
The school council is in the process of
selecting a new principal and interviews for the
position will be occurring soon.
I have not applied for the position as I feel
I do not have sufficient experience teaching
primary students.
STAR OF THE WEEK Week Ending 20.02.2015

Our students had an exciting morning with
the visit of the CFA fire trucks to the school.
They did an amazing job designing “thank
you” posters, hanging their balloons along the fence,
looked spectacular all dressed in red and raised
around $340 to go towards the purchase of a Thermal
Imaging Camera.
