Dow’s Focus
Come Innovate With Us
Comfort. Functionality. Innovation.
Sustainability. These are the things
that unite us all in the hygiene
absorbent products industry. But
each participant brings unique
knowledge, skills, and experience
to achieve these end results.
As an established global leader in Health
& Hygiene, The Dow Chemical Company
(“Dow”) believes that to deliver exceptional
end products to the marketplace, working
closely with our customers is key. Through
global reach, a broad product offering, a
constant focus on what’s next, and experts
with answers, Dow is strongly positioned
to work with converters and brand owners
to develop cost-effective and differentiated
hygiene nonwoven products.

What is Sustainability?

Dow is working on today’s and tomorrow’s
material solutions that can help improve the
processing of nonwoven articles and the end
performance of the final product for several
key applications:
• Baby diapers and training pants
• Feminine hygiene
• Adult incontinence
• Medical drapes and gowns
• Household, personal, and industrial wipes
• Filtration
Some of the more common responses to
this question might include words like
bio-based, renewable, biodegradable, or
recyclable. Though these are all components
of sustainability, they are only part of
the complete definition. Dow assesses
sustainability by considering the full life
cycle of a product – an objective, scientific
approach that provides a comprehensive view
of a product from cradle to grave (or, cradle
to cradle, when alternative end-of-life options
are viable).
And, Dow is in touch with the key consumer
drivers that affect category and brand
preferences, so that our R&D pipeline
develops material innovations that deliver:
• Cloth-like softness and aesthetics
• Body conformance
• Skin health maintenance
• Odor prevention and control
• Liquid management
• Barrier protection
• Reduced bulk
• Elasticity and toughness
• Convenience

Differentiated Technologies
Always Discovering Something New
From back sheets to bicomponent
fibers, Dow is constantly working
to be first to what’s next in hygiene
nonwoven and film technology.
Advancing Back Sheets
Barrier films for diaper back sheets are
typically cast or blown films composed
of blends of DOW™ Linear Low Density
Polyethylene (LLDPE) Resins, DOWLEX™
Polyethylene (PE) Resins, or ELITE™ Enhanced
Polyethylene (EPE) Resins and DOW Low
Density Polyethylene (LDPE) Resins – allowing
for excellent combinations of processability,
stiffness, and impact or abuse resistance.

Measurable Results
Dow resins can deliver on the properties or
attributes desired in barrier films for back sheets:
• Excellent wettability for compounding in breathable films
• High output rates
• High stiffness for downgauging and repeat print
• Cloth-like softness and aesthetics
• Body conformance
• Skin health maintenance
• Odor prevention and control
• Liquid management
In addition, Dow offers a differentiated
resin design that helps optimize stiffness/
toughness balance and simplify the
resin blend for next generation back
sheet. XUS 81841.16 Polyethylene Resin1
, from the family of DOWLEX resins, is
a single resin replacement excellent for
non-breathable formulations.

In the past decade, nonwoven developments and Dow polymer technologies have helped to:
• Reducebacksheetandtopsheetweightbymore than 50%, which translates to roughly a 50% reduction of CO emissions from the manufacture of these applications.2
•Reduceinfantdiaperfilmsfrom28g/m2 to just 15g/m2, which translates to approximately 80% more baby diapers produced from one kilogram of polymer, compared to what was possible only a few years ago.2
• Increasethroughputupto30%duringfiber spinning and reduce energy consumption up to 40% during nonwoven bonding at the same line speed.2

Bicomponent Fibers – The Best of Both Worlds
Bicomponent spunbond technology
advantageously combines the properties of
ASPUN™ Fiber Grade Resins (used in the
sheath layer) with that of polypropylene
resins (used in the core).
Polypropylene
• Improved processing • Excellent abrasion resistance• Broad bonding window• High tensile strength
ASPUN Fiber Grade Resins
• Excellent softness• Improved drape• High elongation
ASPUN Fiber Grade Resins may also be
combined with Polyethylene Terephthalate
(PET) or polypropylene in bicomponent binder
fibers for absorbent core strength. And, the
addition of polyethylene-based AMPLIFY™
Maleic Anhydride (MAH) Grafted Functional
Polymers improves adhesion between
the polymeric and cellulose fibers for an
advanced level of performance, primarily
absorbency and efficient use of the super
absorbent polymer (SAP).
The next big innovation is right around the
corner. Your Dow Representative can provide
all of the latest news and breakthroughs.
To guide our development of sustainable
nonwoven solutions, Dow considers what
sustainability means at each and every
stage of the product life cycle. Here are
just a few examples:
Resin Manufacturer – energy efficiencies,
water consumption, and harnessing viable
renewable feedstocks
Converter – processing efficiencies, energy
alternatives, inter-material replacement, and
lightweighting
Brand Owner – manufacturing efficiencies,
fast packaging speeds, product protection,
brand recognition, and reduced need to
re-manufacture
Retailer – transportation efficiencies,
product protection, extended shelf life, shelf
space, and reduced need to restock
Consumer – leakage protection, skin care,
discreetness, convenience, functionality, and
reduced need to repurchase
End-of-life – re-use, recycling, chemical
transformation, recycle-to-energy, composting,
and landfill

Innovative Products
The Tools for Success
DOWLEX™ Linear Low Density Polyethylene Resins are the mainstay
products in back sheet technology and have
helped enable converters to downgauge
without sacrificing overall performance, which
includes excellent toughness as well as tear
and puncture resistance.
ELITE™ Enhanced Polyethylene Resins
offer a single material solution that combines
properties of sealability and softness; high
puncture resistance and processability; and
high puncture resistance and stiffness.
DOW™ LDPE Resins offer exceptional
product consistency, supply reliability, and
technical benefits that include increased
output rates and web stability.
Dow’s polypropylene resins include homo-
polymer polypropylene, random copolymers,
impact copolymers, and INSPIRE™ Performance
Polymers. These resins offer excellent
processability for optimum productivity.
Elastomeric products from Dow offer
differentiated stretch and comfort in nonwovens
and films & laminates, as well as excellent
processing and end-use performance in
adhesives. Visit www.dowelastomers.com
or ask your Dow Representative about the
following products:
• AFFINITY™ Polyolefin Plastomers
• AMPLIFY™ Functional Polymers
• ENGAGE™ Polyolefin Elastomers
• INFUSE™ Olefin Block Copolymers
• VERSIFY™ Plastomers & Elastomers
Dow offers one of the broadest
portfolios of polyolefin products for
nonwoven applications. Whether it’s
improved processing characteristics
or any number of performance and
comfort properties, chances are
Dow has a resin to fit the need.
And, if not, we’ll get to work on it. For more
specific product information, refer to the
tables in the back pocket.
ASPUN™ Fiber Grade Resins offer
improved processability for converters and
excellent cloth-like haptics for remarkable
comfort compared to homopolymer
polypropylene. Due to their lower melting
point, ASPUN resins are
used for lamination and
thermal bonding applications
such as monocomponent or
bicomponent fibers. ASPUN
resins may also be used in
meltblown technology.
ATTANE™ Ultra Low Density Polyethylene Resins offer improved drapability and
softness for comfort, and low noise for
discreetness. These resins also offer excellent
tear and puncture resistance.
