Henry MooreBritish Sculptor from Yorkshire(1898 - 1986)

Drawing is an important process of invention for Henry Moore. He uses his drawing studies as reference for his larger public sculptures.

By taking different shapes from the internal and external body, Moore adapts these forms to create anthropomorphic sculptures.

Drawing Exercise 1Using a selection of different bones and skeleton parts, make a page of drawing studies in your sketchbook using graphite or charcoal and chalk on sugar/brown paper.

Drawing Exercise 2Develop some of these drawings into a selection of possible sculptures using your imagination

Clay Exercise 1Practice modeling some of the different bones in clay. Remember to look closely at the object from different angles and study its structure whilst modeling.

Clay Exercise 2Develop your own abstract sculpture based on the human body. Look at the work of Henry Moore for reference.
