The Painting Collection

The Hermitage Museum was founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great. Many works were originally part of her collection. Vast sums were spent on the collection.

Madonna Litta shows Mary breast feeding a baby Jesus whose life depended on his mother. It is the most well-known painting of the museum.
