childlieswithinthetop10‐25%oftheincomingfreshmanclass

Notunderstandingthedifferencebetween“includableassets”and“non‐includableassets”.

Certainassetsarecountedmuchmoreheavilyinthefinancialaidformulasthanothers. Forexample,savingsaccounts,CDs,stocksandbondsareall includedandaskedaboutontheFederalFinancialAidform. However,itdoes not askaboutthevalueofretirementplans,annuitiesorcash‐valuelifeinsuranceanywhereonthatsameform.

Forexample,aCPAortaxpreparermightsuggestthatyouputsomeorallofyourassetsin

yourchild’snametosavemoneyontaxes. Whilethisadviceiswellmeaning,itwill

usuallykillmost‐ ifnotall‐ ofyourchancesofgettingfinancialaid. Also,CPAsandtax

preparersarenottrainedinthecollegeadmissionsandfinancialaidprocess.Inmany

cases,theywillunknowinglymakemistakesthatmayendupcostingyouthousandsof

dollarsinfinancialaideligibility!

WaitinguntilJanuary(orevenlater)ofyourchild’ssenioryearofhighschooltostartworkingonyourcollegefinancialaidplanning.

Sincefinancialaidisbasedonyourpreviousyear’sincomeandassets,itisimperativetostartyourplanningassoonaspossiblebefore Januaryofyourchild’ssenioryear. Ifyouwanttoproperlypositionyourstudentandyourfinancestomaximize youreligibilityforfinancialaid,youmuststartworkingonthis,atleast,oneyearinadvance‐ preferablyinthebeginningofyourchild’sJUNIORyearofhighschool(oreventheirSOPHOMOREyear!). Thelongeryouwaitandthecloseritgetstoyourchild’ssenioryear,thetougheritgetstomaximizeyourresultsinthecollegeadmissionsandfinancialaidprocess. Itisalsoimportantforyoutoknowwhatyour“ExpectedFamilyContribution”is,soyoucanstartsavingforit…andcreatingagameplanonhowyou’regoingtopayyourfamily’sout‐of‐pocketcollegecostswithoutitputtingyouinthepoorhouse! And,youshouldalsoknowwhichschoolscangiveyouthebestaidpackagesbefore youstartvisitingandapplyingtothem. Ifyouhaven’tstartedplanning,DO IT NOW!

Goingthroughthecollegeadmissionsandfinancialaidprocessbyyourselfbecauseit’s“cheaper”.

Unfortunately,thisdescribesmanyindividuals.Collegeswillloveyouforthis!Itallowsthemtokeepcontrolovertheprocessinsteadofyou.Asaparentandstudent,byunderstandinghowtheprocessworksitallowsyoutotakebackcontrolfromthem.

Peoplewillreadilyuseadoctorwhentheygetsick,alawyerwhentheygetsued,however,whenitcomestoplanningfortheirchildren’scollegeeducationveryseldomdowefindfamiliesusingaprofessionaltoguideandassistthemthroughthisprocess.Ironically,familieswouldliketosaveasmushaspossibleoncollegecosts,however,wetheysendtheirchildrentocollegewhereitmaycostbetween$20,000‐ $50,000+peryear, parentsdoitthemselvesjusttosaveacoupleofdollars. Unlessyouspentthelast5‐ 10yearsofyourlifestudyingandunderstandingthecollegeadmissionsandfinancialaidprocess,thereisnowayyouaregoingtoknowhowtogetthemaximumamountofmoneyfromeachschool. ItisthegoaloftheHeartlandInstituteofFinancialEducationtohelpyoungAmericansobtainacollegeeducation.

WhatWeProvide…TheHeartlandInstituteofFinancialEducationwillassigneachstudent/familya“CollegePlanningCoach”whoworksdirectlywiththestudentandparents,assistingthemwiththecollegeplanning,admissions,andfinancialaidprocess.

TheHIFECollegePlanningCoachwillworkwithfamilytohelpoffsetthehighcostofcollegebyutilizingprovenstrategiestohelpreduce afamily’s“out‐of‐pocket”costs.

• PossibleTransferIssues– Forthosestudentswhoplantotransfertoafour‐yearuniversityaftercompletingtheirassociate’sdegree,theyMUSTconsultwiththeuniversitythattheyintendtotransfertoaftertheycompletetheirassociate’sdegree. Thestudentneedstomakesurethatthecommunitycollegelevelcoursesarecompatiblewiththecorerequirementsfortheuniversity. It’sbettertofindthisoutsoonerratherthanlatertomakesurethatthetransferprocessisassmoothaspossible.

• LighterWorkload – Theworkloadissignificantlylighterthanatastateuniversityoraprivatecollege.Thereissometimesverylittlecourseworkasidefrommajorexamsbutkeepinmindthatcollegeiswhatthestudentmakesofit‐ puttinginthetimeisentirelyuptothestudent.

• UninvolvedStudents – Thisisprobablythebiggestdeterrentforthejuniorcollege.Manyofthestudentsareuninvolved.Fewhaveplansforanacademicfutureoutsideofwhattheyreceiveatthejuniorcollegelevelandtheystudyaccordingly. Thiscausestensionintheclassroom,particularlywithmoreaccomplishedprofessorswhoarenotaccustomedtodealingwithcomplacentstudents.Outsideofthelectureitself,classroomdiscussionsarerarelystimulatingastheyarecarriedonsolelybytheprofessorandoneortwoenlightenedindividuals.Goodnewsforthededicatedstudent:Theprofessorwillrecognizethosestudent’spotentialandrewardthemaccordingly.

• Campuslife(orlackthereof) – Juniorcollegesdohaveclubsandorganizations,butcampuslifeisnotanintegralpartoftheatmosphere.Formoststudentsatcommunityschools,theirschedulerevolvesaroundworkandclassesaredoneinthemeantime.Ifthestudentislookingforalivelysocialscene,again,communitycollegeisprobablynotforthem.

student’sacademicrecordisthemostimportantpartoftheircollegeapplication.Collegeadmissionsofficersarelookingforstudentswhocanhandleacollegecurriculum.Theyviewtheapplicationinlightofwhatthestudenthasaccomplishedinhighschoolacademicallyandtheirabilitytohandleachallengingcourseload.Theywanttoseethestudent’scommitmenttoeducationandthefactthatthestudentchallengethemselveswithAPclassesdefinitelycanmakeastudentstandout.

• Studentshavemoretimetotakeothercoursesincollege.ItmightbeeasierforstudentstopursueadoublemajororminorortakeelectivecoursesthatinterestthemifthecollegethattheyattendsubstituteshighAPtestscores(4'sand5'susually)forcoursecredits. StudentsshouldcheckwiththecollegeoruniversitythattheyareinterestedinattendingtofindoutwhattheirrequirementsareandiftheyacceptAPexamscoresasasubstituteforsomecollegecredits.

• Studentsmaybeabletosavemoney. Atmostcolleges,youreceivesomesortofclasscreditforAPExamscoresofthreeandhigher(examsarescoredfrom1‐5).Whileascoreof3istheminimumrequiredtoearncredit,manycollegesrequirea4or5beforecreditisgiven.ThiscreditoftengoestowardsintroductorylevelcollegecoursesinthesamesubjectastheAPclass.IfastudenttakesAPclassesinhighschoolandtestswellontheexams,itcouldsavethemsomesubstantialcash.ThefeeforeachAPExamfor2016is$92.

COACHING PROCESS

Oncethecoachreceivesastudent’senrollmentpacket,theygothroughtheinformationtonotespecificsaboutthestudent,theirfamilyandtheircurrentsituation.Thisincludesnotingthebesttimetocontactthestudentorparentandwhichphonenumberisbesttocall.

CONTACTPREPARATION

Thecoachcallsthestudentorparentbetweenthehoursindicatedintheenrollmentpacketwithin72hoursofhavingreceivedthepacket.Ifthereisnoanswerthecoachmayleaveawelcomemessageatthispoint,orattemptoneortwomorecontactsbeforeeitherreachingthestudentand/orparent,oremailawelcomemessage.Coachesprefertohaveaphoneconversationtointroducethemselvesbutifphonecontactisunsuccessful,theyproceedtothewelcomeemail.

INITIALCONTACT

Intheinitialcontactwithastudentand/orparent,whetheritisthroughvoicemail,phoneconversation,oremailcommunication,thecoachintroducesthemselvesandwelcomesthefamilyintotheCollegePlanningProgram.Theyexplainhowthingswillstartout,includingthewelcomeemailthatwillbesentandanyattachmentsandinformationthatmayaccompanyit.ThatmayincludeinformationaboutthesupplementalquestionnaireandtheHeartland/Kuder accountthatwillbesetupforthestudent.Itisnotuncommonforthecoachtoverifycertaininformationsuchasemailaddresses,occupationalgoalsandcollegepreferences.Thecoachmayalsoinformthestudentthattheywillcopytheparentoneveryemailthatissenttothestudentsothattheparentcanseewhatisrecommendedandhelpthemtokeepupwiththeirchild’sprogressintheprogram.Thecoachdoesnotgiveouttheirpersonalphonenumber,butatanytimeifaphonecallisdesiredtoletthecoachknowthroughemailandatimewillbesetupforacallthatthecoachwillinitiate.

Eachmonth,thecoachwillsendageneralizedlistofrecommendationsand/orrequirementsforastudentaccordingtotheircurrentgradelevel.Thiscanincludechoosingamajor,preparingforSAT/ACTtests,planningforsummeractivities,fillingouttheFAFSAoranynumberofthingsthatmaypertaintothatstudentatthattimeoftheyear. Itiscriticalthatthestudentsgothroughtheserecommendationseachmonthtostayontopofwhattheyneedtobedoingtosuccessfullygetwheretheywanttogo.

Thecoachsendsoutanotheremailduringthemonththatcaterstotheindividualstudentandtheirsituation.Itmakessurethatthestudentiscompletingtheirmonthlyrecommendationsandmaypinpointparticularareasforthatstudentlikehowtodeveloparesume,howtorequestlettersofrecommendation,wheretogotostudyforandtakepracticetestsfortheSAT/ACTtestsoranynumberofthings.

Itisencouragedthatstudentsandtheirparentssendemailsanytimetheyhavequestions,needguidance,wantessayscritiqued,etc.Acoachwillalwaysrespondtoemailswithin72hours,butusuallysooner,dependingonworkloadandtimeofyear.
