childlieswithinthetop10‐25%oftheincomingfreshmanclass

withrespecttotheirGPAandSAT/ACTscores. Althoughschools

givefinancialaidbasedonyourcalculationof“need”attheirschool,theywilldefinitely

Notunderstandingthedifferencebetween“includableassets”and“non‐includableassets”.

Certainassetsarecountedmuchmoreheavilyinthefinancialaidformulasthanothers. Forexample,savingsaccounts,CDs,stocksandbondsareall includedandaskedaboutontheFederalFinancialAidform. However,itdoes not askaboutthevalueofretirementplans,annuitiesorcash‐valuelifeinsuranceanywhereonthatsameform.

Havingamentalityof,itdoesn’tmatterwhereIkeepmymoney;it’sallcountedinthesameway.

Whereyoukeepyourmoneycouldmeanthedifferencebetweenyougettingthousandsofdollarsinfinancialaidorgettingnothing! Forexample,moneyinthechild’snameisweightedmuchmoreheavilythanmoneyintheparent’sname. Ifyoudon’tknowhowtolegallyandethicallypositionyourmoneyproperly,youcouldenduplosingthousandsinfinancialaid!

Unfortunately,CPAsandtaxpreparersareexpertsattaxplanning

andpreparation‐ not collegeadmissionsandfinancialaidplanning.

Forexample,aCPAortaxpreparermightsuggestthatyouputsomeorallofyourassetsin

yourchild’snametosavemoneyontaxes. Whilethisadviceiswellmeaning,itwill

usuallykillmost‐ ifnotall‐ ofyourchancesofgettingfinancialaid. Also,CPAsandtax

preparersarenottrainedinthecollegeadmissionsandfinancialaidprocess.Inmany

cases,theywillunknowinglymakemistakesthatmayendupcostingyouthousandsof

WaitinguntilJanuary(orevenlater)ofyourchild’ssenioryearofhighschooltostartworkingonyourcollegefinancialaidplanning.

Sincefinancialaidisbasedonyourpreviousyear’sincomeandassets,itisimperativetostartyourplanningassoonaspossiblebefore Januaryofyourchild’ssenioryear. Ifyouwanttoproperlypositionyourstudentandyourfinancestomaximize youreligibilityforfinancialaid,youmuststartworkingonthis,atleast,oneyearinadvance‐ preferablyinthebeginningofyourchild’sJUNIORyearofhighschool(oreventheirSOPHOMOREyear!). Thelongeryouwaitandthecloseritgetstoyourchild’ssenioryear,thetougheritgetstomaximizeyourresultsinthecollegeadmissionsandfinancialaidprocess. Itisalsoimportantforyoutoknowwhatyour“ExpectedFamilyContribution”is,soyoucanstartsavingforit…andcreatingagameplanonhowyou’regoingtopayyourfamily’sout‐of‐pocketcollegecostswithoutitputtingyouinthepoorhouse! And,youshouldalsoknowwhichschoolscangiveyouthebestaidpackagesbefore youstartvisitingandapplyingtothem. Ifyouhaven’tstartedplanning,DO IT NOW!

Goingthroughthecollegeadmissionsandfinancialaidprocessbyyourselfbecauseit’s“cheaper”.

Unfortunately,thisdescribesmanyindividuals.Collegeswillloveyouforthis!Itallowsthemtokeepcontrolovertheprocessinsteadofyou.Asaparentandstudent,byunderstandinghowtheprocessworksitallowsyoutotakebackcontrolfromthem.

Peoplewillreadilyuseadoctorwhentheygetsick,alawyerwhentheygetsued,however,whenitcomestoplanningfortheirchildren’scollegeeducationveryseldomdowefindfamiliesusingaprofessionaltoguideandassistthemthroughthisprocess.Ironically,familieswouldliketosaveasmushaspossibleoncollegecosts,however,wetheysendtheirchildrentocollegewhereitmaycostbetween$20,000‐ $50,000+peryear, parentsdoitthemselvesjusttosaveacoupleofdollars. Unlessyouspentthelast5‐ 10yearsofyourlifestudyingandunderstandingthecollegeadmissionsandfinancialaidprocess,thereisnowayyouaregoingtoknowhowtogetthemaximumamountofmoneyfromeachschool. • LimitedCurriculum – Typically,communitycollegesare2‐yearschools.Ifastudentplansonobtaininga4‐yeardegreetheywillhavetotransfertoanotheruniversityatsomepoint.Iftheyarelookingforapermanentresidence,thisprobablyisn'tthebestplaceforthem.

• PossibleTransferIssues– Forthosestudentswhoplantotransfertoafour‐yearuniversityaftercompletingtheirassociate’sdegree,theyMUSTconsultwiththeuniversitythattheyintendtotransfertoaftertheycompletetheirassociate’sdegree. Thestudentneedstomakesurethatthecommunitycollegelevelcoursesarecompatiblewiththecorerequirementsfortheuniversity. It’sbettertofindthisoutsoonerratherthanlatertomakesurethatthetransferprocessisassmoothaspossible.

student’sacademicrecordisthemostimportantpartoftheircollegeapplication.Collegeadmissionsofficersarelookingforstudentswhocanhandleacollegecurriculum.Theyviewtheapplicationinlightofwhatthestudenthasaccomplishedinhighschoolacademicallyandtheirabilitytohandleachallengingcourseload.Theywanttoseethestudent’scommitmenttoeducationandthefactthatthestudentchallengethemselveswithAPclassesdefinitelycanmakeastudentstandout.

• Studentshavemoretimetotakeothercoursesincollege.ItmightbeeasierforstudentstopursueadoublemajororminorortakeelectivecoursesthatinterestthemifthecollegethattheyattendsubstituteshighAPtestscores(4'sand5'susually)forcoursecredits.
