THE best way to avoid frost damage toyour plants is to grow plants that canwithstand the frost. The term 'frost hardy'is often misleading because of thedegrees of frost (i.e. light frost vs. hardk i l l i n g f r o s t ) .It is a good idea to ask a qualified localnurseryman what is suitable to grow in your area. Even better, look around your ownneighborhood, and see what survives and

thrives in other local gardens. Often times aplant will survive frost on the foliage, but thesame frost would kill any flower buds whichhave emerged so in areas where late springfrosts may occur, you should choose varietiesof plants that bloom later. Cold air, beingdenser than warm air sinks, so low lying areasof your garden can be several degrees colder than other, higher spots. Consequently frostmay occur in these areas when there is nofrost evident anywhere else in the garden.Plant your more tender plant species on

higher ground or on slopes where the cold air will flow past the plants as it moves to the lowpoint. Any sloping area is far less prone tofrost, because the cold air can't settle there aseasily. Precondition your plants to withstandcold temperatures by discontinuing fertilizingin early April, so that no new foliage is on theplant when the cold temperatures arrive.Older leaves are much tougher and morec a p a b l e o f s u r v i v i n g a f r o s t .When the inevitable occurs and a frost isexpected, there are several things which youshould do to protect your plants. Water thegarden thoroughly before nightfall. The soilwill release moisture into the air around your plants during the night, keeping the air somewhat warmer. Cover up before dusk! Bythe time it gets dark much of the stored heat inthe garden has already been lost. If you have

time, build a simple frame around the plant, or row of plants. (Even a single stake can beused in many cases.) Then drape a cover of newspaper, cardboard, plastic tarps, bedsheeting or any other lightweight material over the frame to create a tent. If you don't havetime to create a frame, lay the protective cover directly onto the plant. This will help to slow

the loss of heat rising from the foliage and theground. Remove the covers in the morning,once the frost has thawed, to let the light andfresh air back in, and to prevent overheatingby the sun. You can collect heat during the dayby painting plastic milk jugs black and fillingthem with water. Place them around your plants where they will collect heat during theday. Water loses heat more slowly than either soil or air. This collected heat will radiate outthroughout the night. Potted plants areparticularly susceptible to frosts because their roots are also unprotected. If you are unableto move your container plants indoors or under cover remember to also wrap them.

If your efforts were too late, or too little toprotect your plants from a frost, resist the urgeto cut off the damaged parts of the plants. To acertain extent, these dead leaves and stemswill provide limited insulation from further frostd a m a g e l a t e r o n .You will have to go back and re- prune your plants in spring anyway.
