VAKKOM MOULAVI FOUNDATION TRUST(A Public Charitable Trust)
Vakkom Moulavi Road,
Thekkummood, Trivandrum- 695035
About Vakkom Moulavi
A visionary social reformer and educationist, a prolific writer and fearless
journalist, a noted scholar and linguist and, above all, a patriot Vakkom
Muhammad Abdul Khader Moulavi (1879-1992) occupies a special place in
the modern history of Kerala
Vakkom Moulavi was a product of the Indian renaissance of the early 20th
century which produced many great people in all fields. He commenced his
literary work with the publication of the Malayalam journal
Swadeshabhimani (Patriot) in 1905, just over half a century after the
suppression of the First War of Indian Independence. At a time when there
was not a single Malayalam journal with such a provocative name and
avowedly nationalist outlook, the publication of Swadeshabhimani
reflected the all-round awakening of the people of Kerala.reflected the all-round awakening of the people of Kerala.
The first issue of the journal (19 January 1905) proclaimed as its policy that
“Our objective is the welfare of the people and we will always bring to light
the grievances of the people whatever may be the consequences. This is
certain”. Together with his editor, Ramakrishna Pillai, who joined the
journal one year after it began publication, Vakkom Moulavi began a
struggle for the rights of the people and came to symbolize the nationalist
aspirations of the common man. The journal ceased publication in 1910
when the ‘Swadeshabhimani’ press was confiscated and the editor exiled,
but in its brief life, it had succeeded in setting a new trend in journalism.
Vakkom Moulavi continued his activities through a series of other
publications and books, sacrificing his entire wealth in the process.

and non forest vegetation; southern Kerala – KSCSTE, Trivandrum
The project aimed at clarifying the role of tectonics in moulding the landforms and forest
and non forest vegetation in SKSB and adjacent terrain. It has been proved undoubtedly
that the entire terrain west of the Sahyadri was thickly forested during the Holocene
climatic optimum-9000 to 5000 years before present (9-5kybp). The Principal investigator

southwest India – CSIR, New Delhi
The project aimed at studying whether the sedimentary basin of South Kerala was potential
for variable environmental action of marine and fresh waters during the deposition and
how far the spore pollen and other micro fossil data could be used to discriminate episodes
of ecological shifts. One such shift was recognized with in a frame where the results contain
Paleoclimatic signature. The Principal investigator of the project was Dr. K.P.N. Kumaran,
Agharkar Research institute, Pune. Co investigators are Dr. D. Padmalal, Centre for Earth
Science Studies, Trivandrum and Dr. K.M. Nair Vakkom Moulavi Foundation Trust. It was

from various places in India. All the issues of the newspapers Muslim (1906-1916), Al-IsIam

published as a book by the VMFT. All the works of Vakkom Moulavi in Arabic-Malayalam have
been transliterated into Malayalam.been transliterated into Malayalam.
The Foundation has a scheme for preparing an authentic biography of Vakkom Moulavi
reflecting the economic, political and intellectual developments of the period in which he
lived. The preparatory work for the biography was undertaken by Late Shri K. M. Bashir who
collected information from many primary sources using questionnaires and interviews of
people associated with Vakkom Moulavi.
The Foundation supported students to complete their M.Phil and PhD works on Moulavi. The
