Motivation
- Archives: Continuation of the historical encyclopedia of Vienna,
called „Czeike“ (Director of the Archives 1976-1989): Felix
Czeike, Historisches Lexikon Wien (6 volumes, last update
2004) and connecting the encyclopedia with content of the
Archival Information System (WAIS: www.wais.wien.at)
License agreement with the publisher Kremayr &
Scheriau KG: Purchase of rights by the city of Vienna
- Library: Concept for a digital history of the city: „Wien digital“
> Transfer of historical knowledge of the city; knowledge
management

Central Aims
georeferenced digital knowledge platform for the Viennese history
based on Felix Czeike, Historisches Lexikon Wien (6 Bände); spatial
reference: all territory that in history has been part of the city.
Bringing together of historical knowledge about the city of Vienna
from the administration of the city and external experts in the field.
Continuous growth and update of historical knowledge about Vienna
The City shares its data with citizens and enables contribution.

Team
Editorial Staff: three persons from the archives, three from the
library; in the future three persons from the Wien Museum. This team
also bulit up the Wiki and now secures quality standards referring to
texts and images.
In both institutions, there is one person responsible for
organization/content and another one for the technical aspects

Technology
Semantic MediaWiki
Advantages Wiki-Technology: well known, cost free, approved,
developed and supported by an international non-profit organization
(Wikimedia Foundation), and developed further without any costs for
the city
Wiki in contrast to data bases searchable > chances to find content
higher. Easy access for the public.
Data security assured: hosted by the IT of the city.

Legal restrictions:
- External contributors convey all rights they have on texts and images
to the city of Vienna

Open Government Data
Due to the open government data guide-line of the City of Vienna,
Wiki data will be provided in the future. Due to legal restrictions only
the content of the database (visible through the forms) will be offered
as OGD.
