Aswith the Pinan kata, itwaspopularizedbyGichenFunakoshiaspartofthe19basickataofShotokanKarate.Jutteiswellknownforitsself-defenseapplicationsagainstthestaff,oneofthecoreweaponsofancientChinaandOkinawa.SomebelievethatJuttewasoriginallyaChinesestaffformthathasbeenchangedtodealwiththedefenseratherthantheuseofthisweapon.Anotherrationaleforthenamehastodowiththeyamakamae(mountainposture)anditsresemblancetothesai,andthereforetothejutte.AlthoughthekanjiforJutteoriginallyread"tenhands",itisoftenswitchedforkanjithatreads"templehand."The"temple"themeisassociatedwiththreekata:Jion,JutteandJiin.Thiscreatesanideathatallthreearedirectlyrelatedinsomeway,buttheymaynothavebeenoriginallyrelated.JutteseemstooriginateinArhatChunFa(Monk’sFistBoxing),isrelatedtoWhiteCraneKungFu,andelementsarereminescentoftheTiger/CraneformofHungGarKungFu.

OnestoryisthataChinesemonknamedJion-JitraveledtoOkinawainthe1800’sandtaughtKamereiSakugawa,whointurntaught“Bushi”Matsumura,whotaughtItosuAnko.ItisequallypossiblethatSakugawalearnedJuttewhiletravelinginChinaandbroughtitbackandtaughtittoMatsumura,whointurnspreadittohisstudents.TheformwaslaterincludedinChojiSuzuki'sSuzuchoKarateinVietnam,whereitwaspassedtoNgoDong.OSenseithenincludedtheformwhenhecreatedCuongNhu,makingittheemptyhandkatarequirementforbrownbelt.

Moves13-14:Againstright-handedknifeattack,executealeftcrescentkicktotheopponent'sknifehand(13).Checktheweaponhandwithyourrighthandasyoudeliveralefthammerfisttothebaseoftheskull(14A)thenarmdragtakedown(14B).

Moves14-16:Liveside:Againstarightpunch(14above),beginwithsennosentiming(attackingtheattack)bydeliveringashort,quickrightcrescent/frontthrustkicktotheopponent'sgroinasyouintercepttheopponent'srightpunchwithyourleftforearm(15).Counterbyslidinginwithanouterforearmstriketotheopponent'sneck,orsteppinginwithaforward/upwardelbowstriketotheopponent'schin(16).

Moves14-16:Deadside:Againstaleftshouldergrabfromtherear(14above),usealeftouterforearmstriketohyperextend/breaktheopponent'sleftelbow(15).Grasptheopponent'sleftshoulderasyoustrikewitharightcrescentkicktotheopponent'sleadknee(16A).Finishwitharighthammerfiststriketothebackoftheopponent'sneck(16B).

Moves16-18:Againstanoppositesidegrab(16above),circleyourhandclockwise,escapinghisgripandgrasptheopponent'swrist(17A).Strikehisheadwiththesoleofyourleftfootasyouswingyourlegcompletelyoverhisextendedarm(17B),landinginasidestanceandbreakingtheopponent'selbowagainstyourinnerthigh(18).

Moves19-23:Startingfromanaturalstanceagainstrightpunch(19),doubleblockwithyourlefthand(20A)intoaright-handedcircularchopblock,graspingtheopponent'srightshoulder/upperarmtocheckandoff-balancehim(20B).Deliveralefttigermouthstriketotheribsandarighttigermouthstriketothethroat(21).Sweephisleadlegwithyourleftfoot,strikingthetopofhiscalfwithyourheel(22).Followupbytakinghimdownwiththerighttigermouthstriketothethroat(23).

Moves23-25:Interceptarightpunch(23)withaleftgraspingsweepingblock(24A),thenyanksthearmupandbackasyoukicktotheinsideoftheopponent'sright(lead)knee(24B),landingwithalefttigermouthstriketothethroat.Therighthandshouldchecktheopponent'sleftarmtopreventacounterattackwiththelefthand(25).Youcouldalsosimplyusemove24asatakedown(seealternateending,below).

Moves26-29:#1Againstabearhugfrombehind(above),usealternatingmiddleblock/lowerblockmotionstocreatespace/breakfreefrombearhug(26-27).Grabtheopponent'srighthandwithyourrighthand,spin180°right,andbreak/hyperextendtheopponent'srightelbowwithaleftrisingblock(28).Usearightrisingblockasastriketothethroat(29),takingtheopponentdownasyouturn(30).

Moves25-29:#2Facedwithanincomingrightroundhousepunch(25above),duckyourheadandenterquickly,steppingbehindtheopponent'sright(lead)legwithyourleftleg(26A)andtakingthemdownwithalowerblockmotion(26B-D).Thesecondhalfofthemanjimovecanbeusedtoblockafrontkickfromasecondopponent(27).Intercepthisrightpunchwitharightrisingblock(28).Graspingtheopponent'srightwristwithyourlefthand,stepinwitharisingforearmtohyperextend/breakthearm(29).Pivotclockwiseonyourleadfoot,takingtheopponentdownwithudeosae(30).

Moves30-32:Usingmove30aboveasakamae(readyposition),interceptarightpunchwithaleftouterblock(31A).Graspingtheopponent'srightwristwithyourlefthand,stepinwitharisingforearmtohyperextend/breakthearm.Maintaincohesiononthehandandapplyakotegaeshiwristlock(32A),usingthereturningmotiontotaketheopponentdowntoyourleft(32B).

JuttewiththeJutte:Perhapsnotcoincidentally,thereisaweaponoftenemployedagainstaboorswordattackcalledajutte,andthekataissometimesperformedwiththesai,aderivativeofthejutte.Thedefenseswiththejutteshowninthetwoblackandwhitepicturesaboveshowaresemblancetomoves21,23,and25intheemptyhandform.

— UnderstandingKataApplications—

Alwayskeepinmindthatthekataareacollectionofmovesmuchlikeadictionaryisacollectionofwords.Adictionaryisaveryhandythingtohavewhenyouneedtolearnanewwordorreferenceanoldone,butyoucan’thaveaconversationbymerelyreadingthewordsoutofthedictionary.Youneedtolearnthewordsbyheart,internalizingthemtosuchadegreethatyounolongerhavetothinkabouttheseparatewordsanymore,butrather,theycometoyouasyouneedthemtorespondtoacertainquestionorconveyaparticularthought.Theapplicationsofthekataactinthesameway,asaprimercourseinself-defense.Youcouldnotfighttryingtoapplythemovesexactlyliketheyarepresentedinthekata.Rather,youneedtomixandmatchdifferentmovesfromdifferentsequencesinordertoaddressthegivensituation.Totrainthis,learnthevarioussequencesdescribedabovebytrainingthemwithapartner,butasyougetmorecomfortablewiththeconceptsandtechniquesthattheyteachyou,haveyouropponentattackmoreandmorerealistically.Don’tworryaboutwhattechniquesheisgoingtothrow,insteadconcentrateonreactingtowhatyouseecomingatyou.Withhardworkyouwillsoonfindyourselflessconcernedabouttheparticularattacksyouthinkyourukeshouldbethrowinginorderforyoutoperformaspecificapplication,insteaddevelopingastateofmushin,or“nomind”,whereyouarefreetoreacttotherealityandspontaneityofthesituation.Yourpartnercanalsobegintostepupthespeed,power,andvarietyofhisattacks.Thistypeoftrainingisreferredtoasrealitybasedapplicationtraining.Reality-basedapplicationsareworthfarmoretoyouinaself-defensesituationthanapplicationsperformedwithacompliantuke.Yourukeshouldonlybecompliant(i.e.notmovingattopspeedwithgoodpower,leavingablockedpunchoutwhileyouperformadditionalmoves,etc.).Reality-basedapplicationsshouldstartlookingmoreandmorelikeipponkumite(onestepprearrangedsparring)andfinallydevelopintokatabasedsparring,wheretheopponentcomesatyouwithdifferenttechniques.Althoughsparringgearcanbewornforsuchpractice,katabasedsparringisnottobeconfusedwithfreesparringinthepointsparringsenseoftheword.Attackersshouldattackwithrealistic,committedattackscloserresemblingastreetfightorassaultthanasparringmatchbetweentwotrainedmartialartistsconcentratingonmaintainingrange,feinting,etc.
