Today's Hollywood Sign:

The word "Hollywood" is often used as a metonymy of American cinema.

Hollywood developed as a rural suburb of homes and small farms.

The land was used for agriculture before the Hollywood idea began.

Due to its highly favorable climate, it seemed anything could grow there.

Filmmaking in the greater Los Angeles area preceded the establishment of filmmaking in Hollywood. The Biograph Company decided to explore new territories and traveled five miles north to the little village of Hollywood,

which was friendly and enjoyed the movie company filming there. By 1915, the majority of American films were being produced in the Los Angeles area.

History:

The name Hollywood was coined by H. J. Whitley, the Father of Hollywood in 1887.

The early real-estate boom busted the same year, and Hollywood began to grow slowly.

— had studios in Hollywood, as did several minor companies and rental studios.

Four major film companies —Paramount,

Hollywood had begun its dramatic transformation from sleepy suburb to movie production capitol.

The sleepy town was no more.

The boom town could not be stopped.
