HONOLULU, DEC. 27. 1894
IS IT JUST?
The government, in its wisdom, has refused to give Bosh andXawnhi their liberty on the fur-
nishing of proper bail.Although it is oor business to
abuse and oppose the presentgovernment we are not blind tothe facts that the members of ithave some qualities which wo
at least must call redeeming. They lack experience. They are extremely narrow-mind- ed.
But they are not exactly fools.Wo do not care to say much
about the conspiracy case.Wo think that the decision of
Judge Perry was sound, and wo
are pleased to certify to the factthat the young judge acted in amost square and fair manner dur-
ing the trinl. "We are also oblig-ed to say that our special friend"the enemy" His Excellency W.
0. Smith behaved himself withgroat moderation and conductedhis case poor as it was with u
great deal of discretion. But hero ends our praise! It is absurd for a government
that claims to be powerful andstable to insist in tho incarcera-tion of men of tho caliber of Bushand Nawabi.
Mr. Dole claims that these menought to bo locked up becausethey havo conspired agaiust him. They havo not been found guiltyyet, and according to tho evi-
dence so far produced wo doubtvery much that thoy over will bo
found guilty of conspiracy by anysauo jury, bo it Hawaiian or for- -
eign.That Bush and Nawtihi havo
no intention to run away goeswithout saying. Two old men, leadors porhaps of an irresponsible mob may b noisy and evendisagreoable, 1 t the' are certainly harmless. Jf Mr. Smithand Dole had locked them up attho time whou they, through thoirinborn asiniuo constitution, prevented tho Hawaiians from fol
lowing tho ever wise advise o
tho Holomca to "fight or vote
thero would have been some sonsoin thoir action, and wo mighthavo gained our point and gottho people to tho ballot box. Now
wo fail to see any reason to keepthose two harmless old men injail.
It does no good to tho governmout, but it does harm to every-
body who honestly, has tho wel
fare of this country at hoarfc, andwho boliovcs that somo day thomen who now fight agaiusfc eachother on "principlo" or moro corroctly on "theory" will meet andand shako bauds for tho sako of
tho common gocd of Hawaii-no-i.
Mr. Dolo is not a coward. Wo
havo known him in conspiraciesand in uprisings. Ho has had a
hand iu nearly all the troublesin Hawaii, and ho has carriedhimsolf as a bravo unflinchingman." And ho knows tho caliber ofBush and Nawabi. Ho has seized them up lougorbeforo the editor of this paper was iu u positionto do so. His present action towards theso men tasto more of
tho viqiousness of "W. 0. Smiththan of tho intelligouco of S. B.Dolo.
If thoro is a desire, an honestdesiro, on tho part of Dolo andhis crowd to conciliate tho menwho now stand iu solid oppositionto them, lot them provo it by
dropping measures, worthy oulyof Siberian governors and lotthem bo generous, forgiving and
just.
A Common Nuisance.
Tho bravo heroes who supportMr. Dole and who shoots off theirmouths and guns every Sundaysnould bo stopped or checked.Tho mouth-shooting-- ofF businesshurts nobody, but tho gun prac-
tising at Makiki is an intolerablenuisance. Yesterday a Portuguesewho tried to imitate the Makikisharp shootors banged off his rifleand succeeded in putting & bul-l- ett
through a private residencenarrowly escaping the woman oc-
cupying the house.
Is It Feasible?
Long ago the Holomua slatedthat the policy of the presentndmiuislration was to make thf
republic so obnoxious that every-
body would shout for annexation.'Diey have gained the poini !Daring the two years that have
passed by we have tried everymethod and wo have weighedever- - measure. Commissionshave gone abroad.
And they failed."Hui" have been formed. And they failed.Mass meetings have been held. And they failed.Conspiracies have been gotten
op.And the failed.Wetmores have been importedAnd he pretty nearly failed. In fact every thing has been
try to pet rid of the misaioa-- 1arios and their oligarchy,
j "What do you say, boys, if we
tried annexation ? --
"We advice nothing. We sim- -ply suggest. That is, we waut tofind out if there is an' honestclass of men who can come for-
ward and tell us to go to thonatives and provo to them how we
can get annexation, when we canget it and what they can gainby it. Annexation has been treated very much like tho "sraafarm" racket. Nobody so far hasover explained the possibilitiesof either. Is it not time to do so !
It is no use to rehash the statearticles from tho Advertiser andStar. The Hawaiians don't listen to those papers and the papersdone present convincing armaments.
We believe that Dolo, Hatchand Damon are in favor of a
closer union between Hawaii andtho United States. But althoughwe believe so, probably owing to
our superior intelligence, thocrowd around us doesn't. Whatare our groat and (according to
themselves) good government do-
ing to obtain that much wantedit ont-fro- m- tin-ho- rn)(blow - - a- -
"closer union !" We don't knowand wo honestly don't believethat any body else does. Thepresence of Thurston in Portugalwhoro he is supposed to shipsomo more coolies for Hawaiidoes not look like annexation.Wo understand that Americanshave a holy terror of contractlabor.
Tho existence of Fraukoy Hast-ings at a club in Washingtondoesn't help us much along ontho road to "closor union."
Tho residence iu Honolulu ofthat most clever Armstrong whoknows all about Hawaii from thehula to tho drawing of a salarywill not "push" matters; andtheroforo wo ask what is the pre-
sent government doing to obtaintho object for which it to all os-
tensible purposes was created ?
It seems to us that tho greatSolons who now run the countryaro fooling perfectly satisfied andthat tho "closer union" is a inj'thof tho past.
Wo don't care one way or thoother. Wo only desiro to helpthiugs along. And if Dolo & Co.will explain whoro and how thoyaro keeping faith with tho monwhobacked them in tho revolution, claimed to havo boon created fortho sako of annexation we shallbo very willing indeed o trans-mit thoir explanation and pro-- r
bably endorse it to tho Hawaiians who yet must be consideredthe backbone of this country.
The Hyacinth.
For somo reason or other, thogovernment organs havo soon fitto worry very much over thomovements of the British warvessel Hyacinth. Tho departureof the little cruiser today issimply n very ordinary occurrence.Every English warship goes "tosea at certain stateu intervals. And then, they return, andanchor after having spent a certain amount of powder and coal.Tho Hyacinth follows tho ruleand her departure or return arenot of tho slightest significance.Tho Lawn Tennis girls want tokeep the boys around. That'sall.
Tho Masonic ball will bo givenon January the 2Sth. It will bothe event of the season.
THE BOARD OF HEALTH.
A meeting of the Board ofHealth was held yesterday. TheBoard in its new shape does somemost wonderful business A
meeting of government physicianswill be held during May or June.We should think that the constant presence of the doctors inthoir respective districts wouldbe one of the strictest demands'of the Board,
Waimea on Hawaii, asks for adoctor.
The Board answers, that theinhabitant- - should use the tele-phou- e
and get cured by wire.Do the learned men, who callthemselves a Board of Healthknow anything about Waimea?
Of course, only " kanakaslive there and they are of no ac-
count. 1 1 is nevertheless a prettygood sized villnge, and it takesabout six hours before medicalservic s cau be secured.
If the president of the Board,Mr. W. 0 Smith, would borrowfrom the Attorne-Gener- al Mr.W. O.Smith, say $2,000, Wai-
mea might have a doctor andHonolulu one or two detectivesless.
The tax-paye- rs dou't amount tomuch in tho eyes of the holdersof Mr. Dole's republic.
The Wilder combination wantsto sell an old 'tub" which forcertain reasons has been "stuck"on to them. The generous pres.ident is willing to take $6,000 forthe old vehicle, and ho naivelystates, that it is one of the finestvessels at float and that it is justtho thing that the governmentwants. He is also willing totake the $0,000 in government
Mjonds
The gentleman forgets to men-
tion how much he paid for thoSumatra. Wo are told that theship as she stands today hascost Wilder's S. S. Co. less than$2,000, which shows, that gov-
ernment bonds are not at par fortho present time. But tho dis-
interestedness of the backers ofthe government is simply beondcomprehension. It io divine !

Another Bilk.
Honolulu is tho loser or gainerby the disappearance ofpertain "Professor" Bradly. Hohas gone. He forgot to settlebefore he departed and his financial affairs aro now being airedin tho District Court. He wasmostly noted through his endeavor to take in the Daileyshows, at the Opera House without gotting through the smallformality of paying ManagerLevey a dollar.
Tho departed "professor" addsauother to the long list of deadbeats who "run" Honolulusociety. When will Honolulu bewiser or get a "society?"

There is no doubt that the

Tay wo all learn a lesson fromtne wisdom displayed bv the elo-quent lecturer:
THE VETERANS DEBT.
..i?! euf ann lectured onDebt evening at Piatt'sHall for the benefit of the Veter-ans Home. Judging by the ap-pearance of the benches andD0X6R. filWl no ?i.. -- - WJUv wore witu ahighly respectable and friendlv
mo veterans owe thelecturer s fame as a wit a veryheavy debt of gratitude. Mr.Neumann came on the stae un-attended and said that themod-est- y
of the Bohemian Clubhaving prevented the other mem-bers from introducing him to theaudienca, he was compelled tointroduce himself. The audiencelaughed good-natured- ly andthe lecturer, finding himself onthe friendliest footing. with hishearers, proceeded with his dis-course. The lecture proved tobe a. very thoughtful and philos-ophic treatise relieved by delicatetouches of humor. Some of thepassages were full of eleganceand all were marked by a clear-ness of expression and a purityof English quite novel aud re-freshing in a lecture designed tnbo more amusing than instructive. In tho close condensation neces-sary for tho columns of a news-paper it is impossible to give acorrect idea of the scope of Mr.Neumann's discourse and theskill with which he put forth hislogical deductions and quaintconceits. In tho prefatory re-marks ho intimated that he mightgive a most striking illustrationof the value of debt by owing theaudience the lecture.
ADVANTAGES OF OWING.
Ho described tho variousdebtors and illustrated tho meritor owing by tho example of thatclass of beings to whom the paj'-me- nt
of a debt is an irreparableloss. The exigence of a debtwhich they honestly hope to payis fresh fuel to the steam, but theobligation having been discharg-ed tho incentive to labor andstruggle on has been swept away.Debt has been called a blessing. Some economists call tho nation-al debt a blessing, but as a tax-
payer the leoturer thought thoblessing was one in disguise. He described in a graphic mannerhow tho victim glides into debtssoftly, imperceptibly, and, find-
ing himself in danger of beingoverwhelmed, puts forth thestronger qualities, which in theeasy qurrents of life are nevercalled into play.
ANCIENT DEBTORS.
In contrast with the modernimprovidents who thus sink intosmall indebtedness, he picturedthe mighty ancients and theiroverwhelming bills, Milo owinghis three and a half millions ofdollars, Anthony at twenty-fo- ur
owing a half million, aud steadi-
ly improving on that respectablefigure so that at thirty-eig- ht hiscreditors were out and injured to
the extent of four millions; Cata-lin- e,
who was a magnificent dob-t- or,
and Pompey, who was no
mean competitor of tho groat audluckless conspirator Ctesar, who
before achieving political pre-
eminence managed to one aud aquarter million dollars, which
he paid and yet left 850 millions
to his heirs. The lecturer drew
a comparison of their vast dona-
tions with the magnificent dona-
tions of our millionaires to chant,
ibie institutions, and notably to
the Veterans' Home. He refer-
red to the great debts of the na-
tions of tho world, and the debtwhich Mother Nature lays upon
us and becomes only an exacting
creditor when we abuse herHe spoke of the debts
