Buildings need a holistic approach !
Explanation of the passivehouse concept in a partly wooden Austrian super market near Reutte

Univ.--Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Winter
Buildings need a holistic approach ! + raw-material production + building products production (together named cradle-to-gate) + the production of the building itself (gate-to-site) + the use-phase of the building and + demolition and recycling (site-to-grave)
+ load-bearing capacity + energy-efficiency + moisture safety + fire safety + indoor air quality + resource-effciency ............
.... sustainable architecture !

acquisition
- Due to outside weather conditions or diffusion from the inside, the relative humidity in the outside layers of the insulation can rise close to 100%. If then the temperature drops below zero in this area, white frost as commonly observed on foggy winter mornings may form on the inside surface of the outer wall cladding panel
- As no sunrays can temporarily melt this frost during the day, the ice layer may build up over time furthermore blocking diffusion to the outside
- Parts of the North walls were opened in the beginning of March, when outside temperatures were below zero, to investigate this phenomenon
no icing or moisture accumulation was observed
Relative humidity and temperature on both sides of the wood fibreboard until the time of icing investigation
Icing
Simulation tools for building physics design and related indoor climate are available
and very well evaluated for many climate conditions!

Market
Metropolitan area grows - from 2004 – 2030 by approx. 225,000 citizens
+ 7,0 Mio. m2 living area
If 20% are timber structures it is an invest of 2,8 Billion € = 140 Mio. €/a
