Not many men hang theirhats in a hat cabinet thesedays. Nor do many womenstash their clothes in an ar-moire. And not since the daysof Lucy and Desi on
black-and-white televi-sion has therebeen heavydemand formatchingtwin beds.
However,at Steven-Thomas An-tiques inSanta Ana,owners Ste-ven Shedd
and Thomas Silk have foundthat such pieces can gain newlife when they are modified tofit today’s needs. In an expan-sive workshop, their team ofcabinet makers, upholsterersand refinish-ers convertcabinets intoentertainmentcenters andmarry twinbeds to createone king-sizebed.
The com-pany’s 25skilled crafts-men “use the same techniquesthat were used 100 years agoin furniture making,” Silksaid. Each piece is treatedpainstakingly by hand.
Before a piece is displayedin the 18,000-square-footshowroom, it goes throughthe workshop. The staff as-sesses each piece, decidingwhether it needs to be con-served, restored or modified
to meet customer needs.Because the owners are se-
lective in choosing antiqueson buying trips to Europe, most pieces simply requirecleaning and waxing. Occa-sionally pieces require addi-tional effort to bring themback to their original beauty.
Some pieces are modifiedto make them useful in today’smodern home. Even so, re-spect for the old is para-mount. With most pieces, theowners prefer conservation torestoration.
“The process of conserva-tion involves doing repairs on-ly when it would structurallynecessitate it,” Shedd said. Inconservation, the original fin-ish is preserved, any flaws orfractures are not hidden andthe piece is kept intact, hesaid.
At the restoration level, modern methods are used tohide fractures or flaws in thefinish or marble. Refinishing,or taking the existing finishoff and applying a new one, isthe most extensive restora-tion effort.
“Our experience has taughtus which one to do,” Shedd
said. The own-
ers of Steven-Thomas An-tiques joinedbusiness ef-forts in 1976.During thepast 15 years,they slowlyhired crafts-men and ex-
panded the workshop. Re-cently, they began offeringrestoration services to thepublic for antiques not pur-chased at their store.
Steven-Thomas Antiquesspecializes in items from 1840to 1940, imported fromFrance, Italy, Belgium, Eng-land and Denmark. In addi-tion to furniture, its inventoryincludes accessories such as
mirrors, clocks, tapestries, porcelains, bronzes, marblestatues and paintings – allstyled in room vignettes by astaff interior designer.
What sort of pieces do col-lectors want? Demand is al-ways high for classic pieces –those with quality wood likewalnut, oak and mahoganywith fine finishes and plentyof hand-carvings, they said.
Antiques appeal to custom-ers who appreciate historyand want one-of-a-kind piec-es.
“When you buy an antique, you’re one person in a line ofowners, one of its keepers,”Silk said. “You have to remem-ber that the piece is going tooutlive you.”
