Buy scheme is having a positive im-pact on new homes development andsales in the region, according to Con-nells’ New Homes Partner, JeremySetter, pictured right.
Connells has recorded an 18 percent annual uplift in the number ofbuyers registering an interest withits branches in the South West ofEngland in the first eight months of2013, a figure which rises to 23 percent in August alone.
Buyers clearly have a preferencefor new-build, with Connells seeing atwo-thirds increase in reservations ofnew homes so far this year.
“The housing market is picking uppace across the UK and the SouthWest region is no exception,” s ay sJeremy. “Buyers are more confidentand active; indeed, we have seen hugeincreases in the number of viewings

KEEPING you and your fam-ily safe in the home is ob-viously something you don’tplan to take chances on, butit’s not always easy to know
if you’re dicing with danger.We often stick to the wiring we’ve
inherited when we move into a newhome because having a property re-wired is a major upheaval, and can bevery expensive. Unless the sockets,light switches and flexes are obvi-ously outdated, it’s also hard to tell ifthe wiring needs to be redone. A goodplace to start checking is the fuse box– if it has rewirable fuses, for ex-ample, it’s in need of an update be-cause modern fuse boxes don’t usefuse wire (however, fuse boxes aresometimes replaced without the restof the wiring being updated, so youc a n’t rely on this as an indicator).Other indicators of old wiring youcan look out for include sockets withburn marks, single rather thandouble sockets, sockets mounted onskirting boards, and surface-moun-ted cables.
The only way to be really sure if thewiring is safe, though, is to get aqualified electrician to test it.
For this, and if your home doessubsequently need rewiring, makesure you use an electrician registeredwith one of the Government’s com-petent-person schemes, such asNICEIC (w w w. n i c e i c . c o m ), as theycan self-certify that their work com-plies with the law.
If they don’t belong to such ascheme, you can get their workchecked by your local council’s build-ing control department or an ap-proved inspector, who provides thesame service but doesn’t work for thecouncil. The key thing is to get acompletion certificate so you canprove that the electrical installation

have had to be fitted with interlink-ing mains-operated smoke alarms.Interlinking means that if there’s afire, all the alarms will go off at thesame time – so even if you’re sleepinga long way from the fire, you’ll bealerted instantly.
This process wasn’t a requirementin older properties, so if your homed o e s n’t have one, you can either havethe hassle and expense of an elec-trician wiring them in, or you canfind a wirelessly interlinking sys-tem.
The FireAngel Wireless InterlinkSmoke Alarm (£29.98, B&Q) is quickand easy to install and has a 10-yearinternal power pack, so you won’tneed to change the batteries or worryabout them not working. Productslike this make keeping your homesafe really easy and while they’re notespecially cheap, you can’t put a priceon safety.

KEEPING you and your fam-ily safe in the home is ob-viously something you don’tplan to take chances on, butit’s not always easy to know
if you’re dicing with danger.We often stick to the wiring we’ve
inherited when we move into a newhome because having a property re-wired is a major upheaval, and can bevery expensive. Unless the sockets,light switches and flexes are obvi-ously outdated, it’s also hard to tell ifthe wiring needs to be redone. A goodplace to start checking is the fuse box– if it has rewirable fuses, for ex-ample, it’s in need of an update be-cause modern fuse boxes don’t usefuse wire (however, fuse boxes aresometimes replaced without the restof the wiring being updated, so youc a n’t rely on this as an indicator).Other indicators of old wiring youcan look out for include sockets withburn marks, single rather thandouble sockets, sockets mounted onskirting boards, and surface-moun-ted cables.
The only way to be really sure if thewiring is safe, though, is to get aqualified electrician to test it.
For this, and if your home doessubsequently need rewiring, makesure you use an electrician registeredwith one of the Government’s com-petent-person schemes, such asNICEIC (w w w. n i c e i c . c o m ), as theycan self-certify that their work com-plies with the law.
If they don’t belong to such ascheme, you can get their workchecked by your local council’s build-ing control department or an ap-proved inspector, who provides thesame service but doesn’t work for thecouncil. Somealarms are also ‘toast proof ’, mean-ing they’re less likely to be set off bycooking fumes.

have had to be fitted with interlink-ing mains-operated smoke alarms.Interlinking means that if there’s afire, all the alarms will go off at thesame time – so even if you’re sleepinga long way from the fire, you’ll bealerted instantly.
This process wasn’t a requirementin older properties, so if your homed o e s n’t have one, you can either havethe hassle and expense of an elec-trician wiring them in, or you canfind a wirelessly interlinking sys-tem.
The FireAngel Wireless InterlinkSmoke Alarm (£29.98, B&Q) is quickand easy to install and has a 10-yearinternal power pack, so you won’tneed to change the batteries or worryabout them not working. Productslike this make keeping your homesafe really easy and while they’re notespecially cheap, you can’t put a priceon safety.
