Operation Rising Star Opens at The Phantom Warrior Center The search for talented vocalists has
ended and the competition to be Fort
Hood’s next rising star kicks off
September 2. For four weeks in
September, aspiring singers will
compete for the title of Fort Hood’s
Rising Star and for $500. The local
winner will then move on to the
Army – wide Operation Rising Star
competition for the chance to win
the Ultimate Music Recording
Experience – Record, Mix and
Master a demo CD with studio pro-
fessionals and other prizes.
Operation Rising Star is an
individual singing competition, similar
to popular shows like ―American
Idol‖ and ―Nashville Star‖ –
participants are judged by a panel of
judges and by an audience of their
peers. Singers must be Active-duty,
Reserve, National Guard or military
family members 18-years old and
older. Attendance of the competition
is open to the public; the unit or fam-
ily readiness group that has the larg-
est number of attendees has the
chance to win $300 towards unit
funds. Each round will start at 7 p.m.
at the Phantom Warrior Center. For

Take Home the Prize in Fort Hood’s Premier Golf Tournament Golfers, now is the chance to show
exactly what you have to your golf
game. When you win this tournament
there will be nothing that the other
competitors can do except bow down
and acknowledge your greatness on
the fairways and greens. Come and
enter the premier golf tournament of
the year – The 2010 Club
Championship, September 4-5.
Winners of the 36-hole individual
stroke play tournament receive an
etched glass trophy with their names
engraved on them. Register early or
the day of the event; registration runs
from 7 – 7:45 am. Play begins with a
shotgun start at 8 a.m. $50 per per-
son, plus your greens and cart fees.

Swim, Bike and Run at the Sprint Triathlon How fit are you? We know Soldiers are fit, but here is a chal-
lenge that even the most fit Soldier should find rewarding. Swim,
bike and run to the finish line of the Sprint Triathlon, September
11. The race begins at 8 am at BLORA and will surely challenge
every skill level. Work through the difficulty of a 300-meter
swim, 12-mile bike ride and a 3.1 mile run to achieve that fitness
level you desire. Registration is free and open to the public. Par-
ticipants may stop by any of the Fort Hood physical fitness cen-
ters now through the day of the race or log on to
www.hoodmwr.com to register. The first 150 registrants to
enter receive a free commemorative T-shirt. Trophies will be
awarded for the best overall male and female times. Medals will
also be awarded to 1st – 3rd place finishers, in each age category.

Comics on Duty Hit the Stage at the PWC The comedic performance that has been entertaining us since 1992 is stopping
by The Great Place. With a total of over 3,000 shows, Comics On Duty Tour
has performed over 250 shows in 80 sites in Iraq supporting Operations Iraqi
and Enduring Freedom, and has performed 300 shows in Southwest Asia. This
year Comics On Duty features Steve Bills, Tommy Savitt, Dwight Slade, and
Tom Cotter. Come on out to the Comics On Duty Comedy Tour at the
Phantom Warrior Center (37th Street, Bldg. 194) September 11 at 7:30 p.m.
for a laugh to remember. This event is free and open to the public. This per-
formance is intended for adult audiences and may contain material that may be
offensive to some individuals or inappropriate for individuals under 18 years of

Jump start your financial New Year’s resolution with Military SAVES Week! The Army Community Services Financial Readi-ness Branch will hold a series of events to help educate and assist Soldiers and Families in their financial planning. A “Coupon Fon-due and You” class is scheduled for February 23 from 5-7pm in the Rivers Building and an “Investing for Retirement” class is scheduled for February 26 from 1:30-3pm at the Resiliency Cam-pus. Also, look out for information tables at Hood Howdy on Feb-ruary 25 and the Main Food Court, Casey Memorial Library and Clear Creek PX throughout the week. Capture Some Culture at the Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration
School is back in session and school supplies and new school clothes can be very costly. The

Aye muy caliente! Aye, aye, aye! Fort Hood
is heating up and we are not talking about
the temperatures outside. III Corps EO and
Fort Hood’s Directorate of Family and
Morale, Welfare and Recreation are heating
up the Great Place with the Hispanic
Heritage Month Celebration Friday,
September 17 from 6 - 11 p.m. at Abrams
Physical Fitness Center (62nd Street and
Support Avenue, Bldg. 23001). One of the
hottest comediennes on the circuit and
native Puerto Rican, Shayla Rivera, will
serve as the emcee of this evening that will
both entertain and educate about the
Hispanic culture. Joining her in the evening’s
activities are local band Grupo Soncache, a
dynamic five-piece Latin band that fills up
the dance floor with the rhythms of Salsa,
Merengue, Bachata, Reggaeton and Cumbias
and the premier salsa band of the Houston
area, La Orquesta Salmerum. Salmerum is
an 11-piece orchestra with a full Latin
percussion section and four horns. For
your further entertainment, there will be
two performance dance groups, Puerto
Rican Kids Folklore and Dance Group
Ballet Folklorico Alegria. El sorprender!
And that’s not all, there will be food and
alcohol available, as well as Soldier dance
instructors teaching various Latin dances
and a Dominos tournament . This event is
FREE and open to the public. For more
