Andalusian• Originated on the

Iberian Peninsula

• Usually white/grey and occasionally bay

• Thick mane and tail, which are often wavy

• Has small ears and a thick neck

• Weighs 900-1,100 lbs.

Appaloosa•Originated in the United States

•A combination of colors and spots

•Hooves are black and white striped

•Weighs 900-1,200 lbs.

• From Arabia• Known for their

endurance• Usually bay,

brown, chestnut, gray/white, and black

• Carries their tail high

• Small head, dished face

• Weighs around 850-1,100 lbs

ARABIAN

Belgian• From Belgium• Also referred to

as the Belgian Draft Horse

• Predominant color is sorrel with flaxen mane and tail.

• Weigh about 1,850-2,200 lbs.

Clydesdale• Originated in Scotland

• Normally Bay or Brown with white markings on the legs and face.

• The white hair on their feet are called feathers

• They can anywhere from 1,900-2,200 lbs.

Dutch Draft• Originated in The Nederlands

• Has short, erect ears

• Coat color is normally chestnut or bay, and sometimes black

• Weighs around 1,400-1,700 lbs.

Percheron•Originally from

France

•Usually Black in color

•They are known for being extremely docile

•Can weigh anywhere from 1,700-2,000 lbs

Friesian• From the

northern Netherlands

• Color is always black

• To be registered, the only other color allowed is a white star on the forehead

• Usually weighs around 1,300-1,500 lbs.

Hackney• Originated in Great Britain

• May be any solid color including bay, brown, chestnut, and black. They often have white markings

• They have small heads

• 800-1,200 lbs

Hanoverian• From Germany

• Chestnut, bay, black and gray/white

• They are bred for sport, often seen in the Olympics

• 1,100-1,450 lbs.

Lipizzan• Originated in

Spain

• Grey/white is the dominant color

• They are born dark, blackish brown, or brown, turn grey/white between ages 6-10.

• Tail is carried high

• 1,000-1,300 lbs.

Morgan•Originated in the United States

•Usually bay, black or chestnut

•Known for endurance and easy manageability

•Weighs 1,000-1,200 lbs

Miniature Horse• From Europe• Can be all

colors or color patterns, including tobiano and overo.

• Under 34 inches tall

• On average, they weight around 250 lbs.

Mustang• Feral horse found in the Western United States

• Descended from horses brought to America from Spain

• Full range of colors can be found

• Weighs around 700-800 lbs

Paint• From the United States

• Can only have bloodlines of Paint Horses, Quarter Horses, or Thoroughbreds.

• Two basic color patterns: tobiano and overo

• Weighs 750-1,300 lbs.

Paso Fino• Originated in

South America• Small Head,

wide-set eyes• All colors and

color patters can be found, including tobiano and overo.

• 700-1,100 lbs.

Quarter Horse• From United States

• Known for its incredible speed over short distances

• Often used as a working cow horse on ranches

• Multiple possible colors, most common is sorrel.

• 1,000-1,300 lbs.

Shetland Pony

• Originated in Scotland

• Stocky Bodies• Can be any

color except spotted

• Anywhere from 28-46 inches tall

• Weighs about 450 lbs. or less.

Shire• Draft horse native to central England

• Can be black, bay or brown

• White feathers on legs

• White below knees, white blaze on face.

• 1,700-2,000+ lbs.

Tennessee Walking Horse• Originated in

bay, chestnut, sorrel, or white

• Long neck and long, straight head

• Weighs 1,000-1,200 lbs.

Thoroughbred

• From England• Can be any

solid color• Has extremely

long legs• Weighs

anywhere from 900-1,200 lbs.

Buckskin

•Tan to gold colored coat

•Black points at the tail, mane, and lower legs.

Palomino

•Gold coat

•Flaxen mane and tail.

Dutch Warmblood

•Usually Chestnut, Bay, Grey, or Black.

•Long legs and an arched neck.
