Good House Keeping is One of the Foundation Stones of Safety on Construction Sites.

Many Serious Injuries result from People Tripping, Slipping, and Falling over Materials and Equipment which are poorly Stored or Placed on Access Routes in a Hazardous Manner.

Did you know there was an OSHA standard pertaining to Housekeeping on Construction Sites (29CFR Part 1926 & 25)? This three paragraph standard doesn't say a lot, but what it does say is important to worker safety and health.

For purposes of this OSHA standard, the following definitions apply:

Debris: Unusable or unwanted construction waste material.

Form Lumber: Lumber that is used to contain liquid concrete into defined shaped until the concrete hardens.

Hazardous Wastes: Waste that is either toxic to humans or to the environment.

Scrap material and debris generated during construction usually consist of Noncombustible scrap material and debris and Combustible scrap materials and debris. Noncombustible scrap material and debris that consist of form and scrap lumber with protruding nails, and all other debris, must be kept cleared from work areas, passageways, and stairs, and from around buildings or other structures

Combustible scrap materials and debris must be removed at regular intervals during the course of construction without increasing the hazard exposure to employees who remove such debris. Nails should be removed from used lumber before stacking.

All construction waste must first be collected into containers before disposal. These wastes include General Waste and Trash (nontoxic, non-hazardous) and Hazardous Wastes. Separate containers must be provided for the collection and separation of Toxic waste, trash and other refuse.

HERE IS A SIMPLE CHECKLIST FOR HOUSEKEEPING ON CONSTRUCTION SITES: EMPLOYEES SHOULD REPORT ANY HAZARDS ON THE CONSTRUCTION SITE TO THEIR SUPERVISOR

HOW TO MAKE YOUR JOB SITE SAFE AND CLEAN

• Keep Grounds in Good Order, Free of Refuse and free of Unnecessary materials

• Store materials Outdoors only in Designated area.

• Provide Designated walk Ways that are Paved and Kept clear of Water, Sand, Materials or any Physical

hazards

• Provide Lighting System that is adequate to allow Workers to navigate around safely , at Dusk and after

Dark

• Trees and Shrubs should not obstruct Traffic Visibility at Intersection, Building Doors and Windows

Check the safety equipments in your area like safety showers, fire extinguishers, Scott air packs, fire monitors…etc. and ensure they are in good condition.

Report immediately any leak or spillage in your unit even if it is minor and remember that every thing is important even if it is tiny.

Avoid oil spillage when you fill or check the oil level in all equipments using lubricant addition system. Also clean the oil spill using the degreaser to avoid any slippery incident.

Visit the job site before closing any permit and make sure the maintenance left the job site in clean and safe condition

Barricade unsafe or hazardous areas with

warning signs until the maintenance work is

completed.

SCATTERED TOOLS WILL HINDER THE SAFETY OF THE JOB SITE.

Plan ahead for the job

before you commence.

And see what tools are

needed to accomplish

the task.

Check all barricade around your area and ensure that all access have barricaded chain with warning signs.

Check & avoid accumulation of fumes in your unit substation and lab to prevent hazardous conditions from occurring. Make sure that all safety equipments in place & are ready for use in case of emergency.

Wheel keys for operating valves should be hanged at the proper locations earmarked for easy accessibility.

Make sure that all hoses in your area are rolled up on their proper location.

HOUSEKEEPING IN THE CONTROL ROOM

Check the safety equipments in the control room which help in the emergency events, like the emergency lights, gas detectors & air system…etc.

Re arrange electrical outlet supply cable and wires to avoid overheating and short circuits

Hang the helmets on the proper location for easily finding it when you need it and to help for the good organization in the control room.

Organize paper work and stack them in the proper binders and place them on the cabinets and shelves designated for them.

Good housekeeping means neatness and odorless. Accident prevention and efficient operation are greatly aided by such housekeeping; safety and housekeeping goes parallel towards unit success work, a clean and tidy plant is a safe plant.
