STRENGTH-BASEDOnanindividualizedbasis,youwillneedtofindthepersonalstrengthsandresilienciesthateachpersoncomeswithandempowerthemtoexercisethosetothefullestpotential.For first time shelter users, people need to be empowered to solve their ownhomelessnessusingtheskills, resources, andexperiencestheyhaveattheirdisposal.Forthose that stay beyond two weeks in shelter, you will need to dig deeper throughengagement with the person to find their motivation to change and leverage thatmotivationasastrengthinthepursuitofhousing.Thelongerapersonstaysinshelter,orthemorebehaviouralissuesapersonexhibits,themoreinclinedyouwillbe–evensubconsciously–toseedeficitsratherthanstrengths.Ifyou live your empathy intentionally every single day…if you work diligently anddeliberately to put yourself into the other person’s shoes…if you see the work as arelationshipbetweenequalsratherthanarelationshipbetweenhealerandwounded–youwillbemore inclinedto findstrengths thatmaynothaveseemedobviousat firstblush.
