We'dliketohelpyouhaveyourbeautifulgardenandeatittoo,andtodothatwiththeleastamountofwork,andifyouhaveasmallspace,you'regoingtohavetooptimizeyourefficiencyofyourwateringsystemmorethanmost.Perhapsit'sjustaddingabeautifulbedwhereyoucangrowsomestuffin.Maybeit'sgrowinginpots.Maybeit'sgrowingvertical.Maybeit'sgrowingonlivingwalls,hydroponicsystems,aquaponicsystems,rainguttersystems.Alloftheseneedaspecifictypeofwateringsystem,especiallyifyou'redoingmoundinglikewe'reshowinghere.Gettingoptimalwateringforamoundcanbequitedifficult.

NowweproduceforthelocalcommunityherewithAgriscaping,andwecombinewithcompanieslikeUtopianHarvestthathelpusselltheproducetothelocalfoodeconomy.ThisisanexampleofactuallyoneofouragricsapeshereinScottsdale,Arizona,andsomeoftheproductionthatweweresellingactuallyjustlastweek.Youcanseethisisoneofthesites,averyurbanenvironment,butthewateringneedsareveryspecificandalsoverycontrolled.Lotofmunicipalwatersourcesiswhatwe'reusinginthisparticularsite.Youcanseehowhighdensitywecangetinourplantingmethodswhenawateringsystemisdialedincorrectly.Wegetalotmoreproductionpersquarefoot,andwecancycleallbyhandratherthanneedingmassivefarmequipment.Here'sanotherangle,justlookingatthesamebedsinthatareathere.Youseeabunchofsweetpotatoesandotherthingswehavethere.

Let'sdivealittledeeperintohowtoautomateandoptimizeyourirrigationsystem.It'sthesefourcomponentswe'regoingtomajorgetintoisassessing,designing,installing,andthenmaintainingyoursystem.

Numberone,waterassessment.Let'sdiveintothatone.Numberone,assessingyourneeds.There'sthreemajorwateringzonesthatyouwanttotakeintoconsideration.You'vegotyourgrowingbeds,whichareannualsthat'llhavethehighestrotationofplants.These

arethethingsthataretrulyjustseasonal.Thisisyourseasonalstuff.It'llrotateregularly.YoumighthavemultipleseasonshereinthePhoenixarea.Wecangetuptofiveseasonspersquarefoot.Perennialsarethingsthataregoingtobeinthegroundyearround.Thesearealotofyourherbsandthingsthat'llregrow.Maybethey'reabiannualtypething,though.They'llgroworit'slikeasparagus.Asparagusisonethatwouldbeaperennial.It'sapermanentplantinthatspace.

Thenthethirdcategoryisyourtrees,yourfruit-bearingtrees,thingsofthatnature.Theexceptionstothesewouldbebananas.They'renotactuallytrees.Weconsiderthemjustlikewewouldasagrowingbed,butthey'reaperennialinasense,buttheirrotationortheirtimelineforhowoftentheyneedwateringismorelikeyourannuals.

Thensucculents,aloes,cactuses,andstufflikethat,they'reinacategoryallintheirown.Theyshouldn'tneedanyadditionalwatering.Insomecases,ifyouhavealotofwaterinyourarea,it'sgoingtoneedsuchgooddrainagethatnowaterwillbeleftstandingfortheseparticularplants.Yougottobecarefulwiththat.Theyhaveminimalwateringrequirements,andsotheymightnotneedanywaterexcepttopullthewateraway.

Assessingtheneeds.Thesethreemajorwateringzones,fourifyouincludegrass,alsoincludethethreeidealwateringsystems.Nowfromourexperience,inordertoproducethemostandwiththeleastamountofeffortlongterm,ourgrowingbedsaregoingtoactuallybesprayirrigatedsimilartohowgrasswouldbe,becauseweonlyneedthewaterdownbetweenfourand12inches.Weonlyneedtospray.Spraywateringisthebestbecauseitleavesallthesoilinsideofthatbed.

Let'sjusttake,forinstance,ifwegotanareathatwewanttowater,ifwehaveourpopupsprayersinthecorners,thenwecanspraywaterthatentirespaceandtheirrigationsystemissubterraneanandoutofanywayofanyshovelthatwemightbeusinginthatarea.We'renotgoingtoenduppunchingorpuncturinganyline.Whenwecomebackin,wecantillthatspaceandit'snotgoingtocauseany

issues.There'snowaterlinesinbetweenthat,nodripirrigation,nospaghettilinesallovertheplace.Wedon'thavetoworryaboutalotofthatmesswhenwe'regrowinginagrowbed.

Nowwewilltalkaboutafewotherwaysofwateringinthosesametypesofbedsthatarealsoveryeffective,butfromourexperience,sprayirrigationisthebest,providedthatyoucanputatypeoffilteronthatcanfilteroutyourchlorine.Nowifyoucangetridofthatchlorineandsomeoftheotherchemicalsthatareinyourmunicipalsource,ifyouhavechlorineinyourwatersource,thenyouwanttomakesurethatyougetthatfilteredoutbeforeyouuseanyofthosespraymethods.

Nownumbertwoisperennials.Weliketousedripirrigation.It'sveryspecific.Wecanhaveourlittleplantgrowingthere,andthenthatplantwillthenhavethespecificdriplineattachedtoitorevenadriploopthatcanbearounditattachedtoourwaterline.Thenitcandripirrigateanddeepwaterveryevenlydowntotherootzoneforeachofthose.

Trees,ideallyweliketousefloodirrigation.Wewanttobeabletofloodthisentirerootzonesothatthewaterpercolateseverywhere,notjustonesinglepoint.Wewantiteverywheresothattherootshavemaximumeffectivegrowthrate.Wewantthemtogrowasdeepandasfaroutasitcan,andnothingdoesitbetterthanfloodirrigation.Nowiffloodirrigationisnotavailabletoyou,weunderstandthatwecandootherthings.Wecanactuallydodripirrigation,bringmultipleemittersaroundaperimeter,andwe'lltalkaboutthatinalittlebit,too.Exceptions,again,bananas.Theycanactuallybewateredinprettymucheveryoneoftheseconditions,andsucculentsonlydrip,ifnecessary,orjustuseyourambientwaterfromrain.

Numbertwo,identifyingavailablesources.There'sanumberofdifferentsources,obviouslyrainwater.YoumightliveinapartofthecountrythatI'veexperiencedaswe'vetraveledacrossthecountrymanytimes.Wefoundthatinsomepartsofthecountry,theydon'tevenhaveanyirrigationsystemsbecausetheyhaveplentyof

availablerainfall.Theydon'thavetoworryaboutchannelingwaterexceptawayfromafield,ifneedbe.Rainwaterisasourceforyou.

Youcanalsocapturethatrainwater,asmanyofourfriendsandassociatesinTexasliketodo,capturethatrainwaterandthenuseitovertime.Wellwater,it'sanothergreatsource.Thebestfreesourcethatweseeouttherethatismostconsistent,providedthatyouliveonsite,isactuallygraywater,whichisthewaterthatisnotblackwater,thatyoucanreuseonsite.Buyitonce,useitathousandtimeskindofthing.

Irrigation,ifyougotanirrigationsystemthatmightalreadybeinplayatyourproperty,whetherit'swateringyourplantsoryourtreesoryourgrass,youcanthentapintothatirrigationoryourfloodirrigation,sothisisreallyconsidered...We'retalkingaboutflood,soifyouhavefloodirrigationavailabletoyou,obviously,likewenotedbefore,that'sbestforyourtrees.Andthendripirrigation,whichwouldbeyourtypicalautomatedsystemthat'soutthere,whereyou'vegotvalvesandyou'reusingamunicipalwatersource.Thenyou'realsothenwiththedripemitters,it'sjustdoingdripusuallyatacertaingallonperhourinonelocationthatthencanhelpdripandirrigateaspecificplantarea.Sprinklers,justlikeyouseeatgrass,itsprinklesallovereverything,soitemitsalargearray.There'salotmoreevaporationlikely,butifthat'savailabletoyou,thatisanoptiontobeabletogrowyourfoodwith.

Availablesources,whatisit?Isitamunicipalsource,whichistypicallyourdripandoursprinklersource?Isitafloodirrigationsource,morecounty-controlled?Isityourownsource?Youownit,youhaveyourownwellwater.Rainwater,isitthenvariableonyourbed?Thengraywater,it'sonesthatyou'vealreadyboughtonceandyoucanjustkeepreusing.

Coupleofquicktrickstotapintothatfreewatersource.Graywaterisanywastewatergeneratedinthehomeexceptforyourtoilets.Recommendedsources,I'mgoingtogivethemtoyouinorderofeasetore-plumb,isyourACcondenserline.Ifyouliveinahotareawhereyouactuallyhaveanairconditioner,thetimewhereyoulikely

needthemostwaterisinthetimewhenyou'reusingtheairconditionermost.JustusingthatACcondensatelinethat'scontinuallyputtingoutdropletsofwater,youcanactuallyrerouteittocertainplantingbedsandgetafreesourceofwaterforthatseason.

Tento50gallonsperweekinthesummeriswhatwe'veexperiencedfortheweeksthattheairconditionerison.Ifyou'vegotahigherambienthumidity,it'sgoingtobeevenhigherthanthe50-gallonmark.Ifyou'vegotreallylowambienthumidity,likewedohereinthePhoenixarea,you'regoingtobeclosertothat10gallons.There'ssomevolumerespecttowhat'scomingoutofthatwashingmachine.Eighty-fiveto100gallonsperperson,perweek,istypicallyusedbyawashingmachineinordertodoyourloadsoflaundry.Weanticipatethat'satleasttwoloadsoflaundryperpersonifyou'redoingjustonefortheentireweek,yourdarksandyourlights.Nowyoumighthaveahigh-efficiencywashingmachine,whichwouldthendecreasethatpotentiallybyhalfintermsofyourgallonsperperson,butusuallynotmorethanthat.Washingmachine,goodsourceofwater,reallygoodespeciallyifyou'reonlywateringonceaweek.Reallygoodsourceforyourfruittrees.

Ifyoucan'tgetfloodirrigation,considertappingintoyourwashingmachineinyourlaundryroom,butstartusingnon-chlorinebleachesandthingslikethat.Beverycareful.Yourtypicalsurfactants,however,inyoursoapslikeaTidewithoutbleach,sotypicallaundrysoaps,areactuallygoodsurfactantsthathelpbreakupclaysoils.Ifyouhavenastyclaysoil,thatwashingmachinewatercanbeofbenefit,especiallyifyougetsoapsthathaveotherbasechemicalsandmicronutrientsthatactuallyarebeneficialtoyourstonefruits.Stonefruitsareoneofthebestonesthatgrowoffofwashingmachine-typewaterjustbecauseofthenatureofthesurfactantsinthesoapsthatpeopleusetowashtheirlaundry.LookoutforOasissoaps.That'ssomeofthebetterstuffifyou'reconcernedaboutthat.

Shower,70to100gallonsperperson,perweek,providedthatyou'reshoweringeveryday,evenifit'sjusta15-minuteshower.Thenyou'vegotahugevolumeofwaterthat'sthereavailableforyouona

regularbasis.Tub,about25gallonsperkidbath,notfillingtheentirethingup,butabout25gallons.Foranadult,it'susuallyaveragingaround35to50gallons,justdependingonthesizeofyourtub.Thatisalsoagreatwatersource,especiallywhenyouthinkofthefrequency,andthat'sreallywhatyouwanttolookat.It'swhat'syourfrequencyofuse,andthathelpsyoudetermineifanyofthesesourcesareviableforthetypesofthingsyou'regrowing.

Myshower,becauseI'musingiteveryday,isaviablesourceforthethingsthatneedpotentiallywaterdaily,whichwouldbemytraditionalgrowbeds.Wedoliketostayawayfromrootvegetables.Wetypicallyliketousethingsthataregrowingoutofagraywatersystemthataregrowingastemandgrowingthefruitsbecausethere'sanaturalfiltrationprocessalreadyindicativetothat,asopposedtowhenyouhavearootvegetable.Thentheactualwateristouchingtheplantitselfandthepartthatweactuallyeat,soyouwanttobealittlemorecarefulwiththatandwhatyou'reputtingdownthedrain.That'sbasicallyonthat.Bathroomsink,that'sanotheroption.It'salreadygotalittlebitofgravityfeedifyouthinkaboutwhereyourbathroomsinkactuallyexistsinyourhouserelativetoanexteriorwall.Youcanactuallytapinandtapoutofthatsidewallandyouhavealittlebitofgravityfeedthere,whichmakesitalittlebiteasier.

Reverseosmosis.NowifyougotanROsystemunderyoursinkinyourkitchentogetyouthatwonderfulpurifiedwater,foreverygallonyoudrink,thereisaboutsixto10gallonsthatgodownthedrain.Whatweexperienceisabout13to21gallonsperpersoneveryweekofavailablewaterthroughthatlittleline.Whenyoustartthesesystems,theybasicallysetthelineupsothatitactuallygoesdownthedrain,soitgoestoyourunitunderneathyoursink.Yougotthelittlefilterthings,andithasalittlelinethattapsinrightontoyoursewerline.

Youcantapitintothatandtapintothatsink.Orwhatwecanrecommendisyoudoafive-eighth-inchholerightoutthesideandthenjustputthatquarter-inchlinebasicallyrightoutsideandyoucanputitonsomeotherdripemitterstosomespecificplants.Asyou

drinkthewater,itwillautomaticallygothroughthoselines.Itispressurizedasitcomesoutofthatsystem.It'sjusthowthosesystemswork.Theyneedtobepressurizedinorderforthesystemtoworkcorrectly.

Let'sdivealittledeepernow.Welookedalittlebitatsourcesofwherethewaterisgoingtocomefrom.Now,let'slookatdesign.Fourkeystosuccessindesigningyourirrigationsystem.Numberone,knowwhatyourplantneeds.Numbertwo,setenoughvalvestobeabletoaccommodateitbasedontheamountofpressureyouhaveavailablefromyoursource.Plantoautomateandandthenalignwithweatherstations.

Numberone,plantingneeds.There'sthreemajorplantingzonesthatwetalkedabout,yourgrowbeds,yourperennials,andyourtrees.IfIwasgoingtotakeasidecutfromalandscape,Ijustlookatthis.Weliketodothingsinlayers.We'llhaveatreelayer,abushlayer,whichisourperennials,let'sjustsaythat.Thenwegotagrowbedlayer.Ineachoftheselayers,weneedaseparatelineforeachoftheselayers.Let'ssayhere'smypathwayjustsittinguponthesidebackthere.Wegotagrowbedlayer,wegotapathway.WhatI'mgoingtowanttohaveisIwantmygrowlinealignedbasedonmyplantneed,closesttotheinteriorofmypath,butnotunderneathmybed,andthiswillactuallyhelptakecareofmygrowbedspace.

ThenIwantanotherlineformyperennials.Well,there'sspaghettilinesthatgoupthere.Thequarter-inchlines,inordertosetmydriplinescangoacrossthat,soaseparatelineforthoseones.ThenaseparatelinealsoformytreessoIcansetthosedripemittersupifIneedtousethem.Floodirrigationnotnecessary.Floodirrigationtypicallywon'tallowyoutogetwateronadailybasis,andsoifyouhavethingsthatrequireadailybasis-typewatering,thenyou'regoingtoneedtofindadifferentsource.Usingairrigationsystemtiedtoyourhomewater,thatwouldbeprettymuchthemosteffectiveandmostpredictableformatthatyoucangetonthatone.

Movingagaintoplantneeds,weunderstandthatingrowbeds,theannualsaregoingtoneedbetweenfourand12inchesdailyofwater

thatcanthenpercolatedown.Whenwegobyinches,we'retalkingmoreaboutdepth.Talkingaboutfourinches,thatthewatercanactuallygetaboutfourinchesto12inchesdeepalmosteveryday,andthat'sthemaxusage.We'realwaysplanningforourmaxneedtowater.Perennials,24inches-plusdown,sothat'sthedepththatthewater'sgoingtogo.

Thereasonwetalkaboutdepthisbecauseeachofyouhavedifferentsoilconditions,andwiththosesoilconditionsmeansthatratherthantrytoaccommodateeverybody'ssoilconditions,say,"Oh,itonlytakes12minutestowateryourplants,"itcouldtakefourhoursonalowdripjusttogetitdowntotherightperc,thedistancewhereallofourrootsaregrowing,becauseyoursoiliscrazyclaylikemineis.Oritcouldbesupersandy,itonlytakesfiveminutestogetdownthere,butweneedmoreemittersacrossalargerspace.

Thenfortrees,wewanttogetdownthreefeetplus,andinallreality,wewanttogetdownsixfeetinordertoaccommodateourfruittrees.Nowexceptions,again,willbebananas.Theyreallyonlyneedtobedown24inches,sotheyneedfrequencyofwateringlikeagrowbed,butdepthofwateringlikeaperennialbed.Succulents,theseonlyneedaboutfourinchesmax,andsoveryminimal,andtheydon'tneedabovemaybeonceamonth,andinsomecases,evenlessthanthat.

Allright.Valve-wise,aswearetalkingaboutit,wehaveafront-yardscenarioandaback-yardscenario.There'safixedwallhereandafixedwallhere.Thisisjustasamplegarden.Whatwewanttodoisactuallysetthisupsowehaveonevalvethattakesthegrowbeds,andyou'llsee...Mightbealittletoosmallforyoutosee,butallthisbrownarea,thisisadesignedgrowbedwithinadistancethatcanbeeasilymaintainedandharvested.Thisisaconversiontoafrontyard.Withallofthishere,we'vegotonevalvethatcantakeupabout10sprinklerheads,so10heads,andeachheadcanusuallytakeuptoa12-footradius.

Wewanttomapthisout.Wecandoupto10heads,andthisisaspecifictypeofheadwe'llgettolaterandexactlywhattypeofspray

headwe'duseforthis.Youcangetuptoa12-footdiameterinaspaceupto10headsonthat12-footdiameter,butthat'samax.Youalwayswanttogoalittlelessthanthatintermsofthesquarefootagethatitcanbeaccommodatedto.You'llwanttomapitout.Getascaledrawingofyourpropertyandbeabletomapout,okay,ifI'mspraywateringthiswholeareaandthat'sa12-footradiusandIwanttheretobeoverlapbetweenmysprayheads.Iliterallywanttheedgestofullyoverlapwherevermysprayheadsare.IwantthemtofullyoverlapandensurethatI'vegotcoverageineverysquarefootthatI'vegotwiththat.

Again,12-feetradiuscircles.Basically,youcancutthemout,makeascaledrawingofit,printsomethingout,makeascalethingsoyoucanfigureouthowmanyheadstheycangetononevalve,andthatwouldbethemax.Again,it'swithaspecifictypeofsprayhead.Youmayonlybeabletogetfiveifyou'retryingtodoalargerradiusorwithatraditionalsprayhead.We'llgettothematerialsinalittlebit,butmax10,12-footradius.
