How can I invest one hour to apply this to my next training?

Before 2003 Blackout After 2003 Blackout

1. Turn to a partner

2. Work together to list out 3-5 most important things you know about the 2003 blackout (ideally the causes).

3. Prepare to discuss with the large group afterwards.

4. After 4-5 mins, watch for a signal to finish up.

On a scale of 1-10 (highest), how engaged were you with the content of the 2003 blackout in the last few minutes?

For now, ignore the content you discussed (the blackout). Instead, recall the details of the discussion process you just went through. What did you actually DO? How did this process differ from other in-class, small group projects you’ve done?

Partnership-Based Qs

1. Reduce fear 2. Make learners active, not passive 3. Reveal misunderstandings, gaps,

assumptions & mental models 4. Encourage rehearsal & revision 5. Raise quality of large group discussion 6. Engage 100% of learners 7. Allow easy monitoring & mentoring 8. Allow instructors to freeze time

How can I start using this technique right now? (See handout, p.2)

On your own, in the next few minutes, write up one high quality partnership-based question. When you’re done, turn to someone around you who is also done, and get their feedback on your question. Prepare to discuss with the large group in a few minutes.

Instructional Systems Design

Systematic Approach to Training

“ISD takes too long, it costs too much, and by the time you’re through, the opportunity you were trying to exploit through training has passed you by.”

Fred Nickols, Executive director for the Educational Testing Service (ETS) of Princeton, NJ. In 1970, he developed the U.S. Navy's first training course to teach the ISD model to instructors.

“Nine times out of 10, if you see a great training program you’ll find it wasn’t created by someone schooled in ISD and following that process...”

Sivasailam ‘Thiagi’ Thiagarajan, international trainer, founder of Workshops by Thiagi, & past president of the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI).

“How do you know when you’ve developed good training? “If your only answer is, ‘It’s good training because it was developed using the following process,’ then what you'll produce is cr-p.”

Jack Gordon, former editor of TRAINING magazine.

What’s the core problem with ADDIE / ISD / SAT?

Waterfall Rapid Prototyping

Process Linear Cyclical

Principle

Clients “sign off” on each step of the process to keep moving forward

Clients don’t know exactly what they want until they see it
