HOW TO HANDLE A TOUGH BOSS

1. Dealing With BossIt is said that professionals leave managers, join companies. So what do you do if you are stuck with a tough boss? How do you deal with a demanding senior?

2. Think Like The Boss

One trick is to put yourself in the boss's position. How do come across when you look at yourself from his/her perspective? Are you resisting change or not meeting targets? Are you a silent non-contributor in meetings or an arguing junior? Always know that while the boss may take up a lot of your mind space, you occupy only a part of the boss' worries.

3. Watch Your WordsUndermining the boss's authority can create trouble for you. This distorts the basic hierarchy of the organisation. Also, do not badmouth the manager even if you think he/she is being horrible to you. If the word reaches the manager, his/her confidence in you will plummet and you may not be able to regain it.

4. Know Boss's Working StyleAnother way is to understand the boss's working style. Take steps to show your support for your boss' plan. Start by delivering what you promise and within deadlines. Communicate your progress and failures on time. It is important understand his/her priorities and support them. Also, offer to help.

5. Lessen Boss's Burden

After you feel you have earned the boss's trust, seek more autonomy. This will no doubt reduce the boss's burden and get you the freedom to work without supervision.

6. Boss Beyond OfficeYour boss is not much different from you - striving hard to earn a livelihood like you. To change your equation with the boss, try to know him as a person, not your boss. It will help you identify with him/her.

7. Making boss the mentor

Seek a mentor in the boss. This will make the boss feel valued. With boss being your mentor, you can discuss challenges freely with him/her.

8. Don't Compare BossesIt is not a good idea to compare your new boss with your previous boss with your colleagues. Like saying how great your previous boss was. If the word reaches your current boss, it will create bad blood.

9. Ask For ExpectationsStreamline your relationship with your boss and share your targets and progress. Also, ask for his/her expectations from you and accommodate his/her concerns.

10. Showing CommitmentBe fully committed to your role, your team and your boss. A wait-and-watch policy won't work. Once you are committed to making things work, new ideas will open up and you will do what it takes to succeed.
