How to:

make a granny square necklace

kootoyoo…click & crochet

• This is hardly even a “how to”. It’s just a super simple, super speedy bit of fun.

• You’ll need a 3mm crochet hook, 3 skeins of floss, jewellery findings & pliers (if you have them OR you could just tie a knot).

“Pattern”& I use the term loosely. This will work however you make your granny squares or motifs.

• Chain 4• Slip stitch into first chain to make a ring.

ROUND 1: • Ch 3, 2T, Ch1, 3T,Ch1, 3T, Ch1, 3T, Ch1 & slip stitch into 3rd Ch of 1st Ch3 to join.

ROUND 2(new colour): • in corner Ch3, 2T, Ch1• next corner 3T,Ch1, 3T, Ch1• next corner 3T,Ch1, 3T,Ch1• next corner 3T,Ch1, 3T,Ch1 • return to first corner - 3T,Ch1, & slip stitch into 3rd Ch of 1st Ch3 to join.

ROUND 3(new colour): • in corner Ch3, 2T, Ch1• side 3T,Ch1• in corner 3T,Ch1, 3T,Ch1• side 3T,Ch1• next corner 3T,Ch1, 3T,Ch1• side 3T,Ch1• next corner 3T,Ch1, 3T,Ch1• side 3T,Ch1• return to first corner 3T,Ch1, & slip stitch into 3rd Ch of 1st Ch3 to join.

• CHAIN up to make the necklace chain. Just use your eye…maybe 30-35 chain. Knot off.• In opposite corner slip knot & join chain colour then work CHAIN to make necklace chain. Again about 30-35 chain.

NOTE: I think that you want this to be nice & tight so that the shape is held when it is around your neck. That is why I only chain 1 between clusters & I keep my crochet stitches as tight as I can.

Step 2:

• Make a slip knot & chain 4

Step 3:

• Slip stitch into the first chain to make a “donut”.

Step 4:

• Chain 3 to begin your first round.

Step 5:

• 2 Treble, chain 1, 3 treble, chain 1, 3 treble, chain 1, 3 treble, chain 1.

Step 6:

• Slip stitch to join your first round.

Step 7:

• Knot off your first colour.

Step 8:

• Begin your second round in the corner.

Step 9:

• I like to begin with only 1 cluster in the corner because I think it gives a nicer finish.• Continue working the round as you did for round 1. 3 trebles & then 1 chain

between clusters.

Step 10:

• Once you’ve finished the round knot off your second colour.

Step 11:

• Begin your third colour. • Again I always start in the corner with one cluster only.

Step 12:

• Once you’ve completed the round just keep chaining.• I think probably about 30-35 chain is long enough but make it

right for you.

Step 13:

• Once the chain is long enough – knot off & snip floss.

Step 14:

• In the opposite corner attach the chain colour & just chain up again (30-35 chain).

Step 15:

• Your necklace should now look something like this.

Step 16:

• Using a needle weave & neaten your ends.

Step 17:

• Now attach your findings.• If you don’t have these on hand just make your chains

longer & tie it in a knot when you wear it.

Step 18:

• See how I’ve made the “wrong” side of the chain the back?

Step 19:

• Clamp!• This will hold the crochet nice & firmly.

Step 20:

• Attach the rest of your bits & pieces.

Step 21:

• Repeat for the other end of the chain.• Attach your clasp.

Finished

• I think you want this to be super tight. Embroidery floss is not as forgiving as lovely fluffy yarn so mistakes are pretty visible.

• Go slow & have fun.
