How to:make a macro lens for your (i)Phone

As with any project the key is having everything on hand that you’ll need.

For this project you need…cling filmsugru hack putty sugru - hack things betteran old broken lens (or small magnifying glass) baking paper scissors

Begin by covering the camera lens & corner of your phone with cling film.

Pull apart the lens or magnifying glass & isolate the glass.

Clean lens & set aside for later.

Now’s the fun part. It’s play doh for grown ups.

Sugru is amazing stuff – it air dries & cures in 24 hours. If you have another idea by all means go with it but I think this stuff is terrific. You can buy it online here…http://sugru.com

Using about ½ of one small packet of sugru role a couple of spaghetti strings. They say the stuff stains so I did this on baking paper.

Lay your lens onto your string of sugru & roll the lens along the string to enclose it.

Just use your scissors to cut off the excess. You should now have a lens enclosed in sugru.

Now position your magnifier over the camera lens.

Gently press the sugru to ensure a tight fit around the glass & optimum positioning.

Turn your phone over & attach another spaghetti strand as pictured.

Roll the remaining sugru into a ball, press flat & “fill in” the corner.

Double check your lens position & the fit of the lens corner onto the phone.

Once you are happy with the fit of the lens corner remove the cling film & the lens from your phone & leave to cure.

Time lapse…24 hours later…

Remove the cling film from the inside of your lens corner.

Clean lens to remove any oily residue from the sugru.

Fit to phone.

Use & enjoy.
