How Virginia is Scaling the Z-Degree Across All 23 Colleges

Richard SebastianDirector, Teaching & Learning TechnologiesVirginia Community College Systemrsebastian@vccs.edu

A Z-Degree is a pathway to a degree or credential that has zero textbook costs

by using course materials made up of open educational resources (OER).

What is a Z-Degree?

OER are teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or

have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use

and re-purposing by others. Open educational resources include full courses, course materials, modules,

textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other tools, materials, or techniques

used to support access to knowledge.

What is so great about open educational

resources?

A multi-institutional study of the impact of open textbook adoption on the learning outcomes of postsecondary students

• 5,000 postsecondary students using OER • 11,000+ control students using commercial

textbooks• ten (10) institutions across the United States• fifteen (15) different undergraduate courses

Students whose faculty chose OER generally performed as well or better than students whose faculty assigned commercial textbooks--Fischer et. al.(2015)
