Image File Types

JPEG• Joint Photographic Experts Group• Filename Extension:

.jpg• the most common image format used by

digital cameras and other photographic image capture devices;

• the most common format for storing and transmitting photographic images on the World Wide Web.

.gif• supports 8 bits per pixel, allowing a single image

to reference a palette of up to 256 distinct colors chosen from the 24-bit RGB color space;

• supports animations and allows a separate palette of 256 colors for each frame.

.png• supports palette-based (palettes of 24-bit

WMA• Windows Media Audio• Filename Extension:

.wma• an audio data compression technology

developed by Microsoft;

WAV• WAVE or WAV• Waveform Audio File Format• Filename Extension:

.wav• a Microsoft and IBM audio file format

standard for storing an audio bitstream on PCs;

• a method for storing data in “chunks”.

MIDI• Musical Instrument Digital Interface• Filename Extension:

.mid• an industry-standard protocol that enables

electronic musical instruments (synthesizers, drum machines), computers and other electronic equipment (MIDI controllers, sound cards, samplers) to communicate and synchronize with each other.

CDA• CD(Compact Disc) Audio Track• Filename Extension:

.cda• a small (44 bytes) file generated by Microsoft

Windows for each track on an audio CD;• The file contains indexing information that

programs can use to play or rip the disc.

.wmv– it is developed by Microsoft;– it was originally designed for

internet streaming applications because it is the most common format on the net.

3GP

• Third Generation Partnership Project (for 3G Phones)

• Filename Extension: .3gp

both an audio and video format that was designed as a multimedia format for transmitting audio and video files between 3G cell phones and the internet.

AVI

• Audio Video Interleave• Filename Extension:

.aviit is a multimedia container format which divides the file’s data into blocks or “chunks” like the DVD video format.

MP4

• MPEG-4 Part 14• Filename Extension:

.mp4most commonly used to store digital video and digital audio streams, especially those defined by MPEG, but can also be used to store other data such as subtitles and still images.

FLV

• Flash Video• Filename Extension:

.flva container file format used to deliver video over the Internet using Adobe Flash Player.

MOV

• filename extension for the Quicktime Multimedia File Format

• Filename Extension: .mov

QuickTime File Format (QTFF) is a computer file format used natively by the QuickTime application.

SWF

• Shockwave Flash• Filename Extension:

.swfa Flash movie developed by Macromedia.

ASF

• Advanced Systems Format• Advanced Streaming Format• Filename Extension:

.asfIt is intended for streaming and is used to support playback from digital media and HTTP servers, and to support storage devices such as hard disks.
