Authentic Intellectual Work

Reflective Quotes by

Humboldt CSD Staff-Spring 2012

One of the very few opportunities that teachers

get to collaborate with colleagues on improving

their methods of teaching.

AIW is a way to MAXIMIZE learning

for the student.

Taking a concept and

making it meaningful so

that deeper understanding

takes place.

A framework that sets standards for teaching to maximize rigor, increase student engagement and

gives students the tools to succeed in the real world.

A method of making instruction more complete, giving

students the opportunity to learn multidimensional.

“I’ve been through five years of 17 different initiatives, and nothing seemed to fit together. Halfway

through my first day of authentic intellectual work training, the light bulb

came on, and I thought: This is the piece that’s been missing.”

— Spencer (Iowa) High School teacher leader, 2011

Helps us make our lessons something students are highly

engaged in and can relate to and find purpose in.

AIW is a student centered/driven

approach.

The AIW process is based on stretching a student’s comfort

zone to think and learn.

AIW has caused me to continuously think

I gained new insight and perspective about

the kinds of tasks I had prepared.

AIW is what we are using to help

our students develop a deeper

understanding of their learning.

It was beneficial to be able to help each other

be better educators!

Hearing the ideas of others, helped me

come up with quality work

for my students.
