The Hydrobloc system is a combination of a main Hydrobloc valve and specific, scalable pilot circuits (Fig. I). • This servo-operated hydraulic valve, controlled by one or more appropriate
devices, can be used for pressure, flow, level and pumping station control.• Several functions can be combined to achieve numerous applications.• It is particularly suitable for use in: - Drinking water networks, - Industrial or fire fighting water networks, - Screened raw water (2 mm) for irrigation, - Drinking water treatment plants.• PN 10, 16 or 25 bar depending on the application (PN 40 bar, please consult us).• DN 32 threaded G 1’’¼ and DN 40 threaded G 1’’½, DN 40 to 1000 with standard
flanges.• Operating temperatures of +1 °C to +65 °C.• Specific pilot circuits can be changed as required, without changing the main
valve (Fig. I). • Slotted cylinder anti-cavitation kit available as an option.• Low Flow Stabiliser (LFS), seat, valve disc guide, valve disc and valve disc plate
shape profiling: accurate adjustment guaranteed regardless of valve opening percentage.
• Watertight at zero flow rate.• Valve opening speed and/or closing speed controller fitted as standard.• Standard horizontal installation; for vertical installation, please consult us.• Pilot circuit installed on right bank as standard, left bank on request.• Supplied with pressure gauge isolating valves (pressure gauges optional).• Numerous options available: - On the main valve (see page 24). - On the pilot circuit (see page 15).• Easy to install and maintain.• Annual maintenance can be performed without switching off water supply;
tri-annual in-depth maintenance can be performed without dismantling pipe.• 3-year warranty.

The Hydrobloc system - Operation
• The main valve comprises (Fig. III): - a body (01) separated into two sections by an open partition (02). - a bonnet (03). - a mobile unit (04).The partition (02) and the mobile unit diaphragm (04) define three separate areas: upstream (A), downstream(B) and operating chamber (C).• The Hydrobloc valve uses the motive force of the water entering the operating
chamber (C).• The valve opens as a result of the following equation: The force that lifts the mobile unit (yellow and orange arrows) is higher than
the force pushing it downwards (purple arrows) + the weight of the mobile unit + the action of the chamber spring.
• The valve closes as a result of the reverse equation: The downward force (purple arrows) + the weight of the mobile unit + the
action of the chamber spring is higher than the force lifting the mobile unit.• By default, if there is zero flow rate in the valve, the pressure in zones A and
B is almost identical. The forces shown by the arrows cancel each other out. Only the weight of the mobile unit and the downward action of the spring remain. The valve therefore closes naturally.
• For satisfactory operation, the Hydrobloc valve needs flow through it and therefore a pressure difference between the valve intake and output.
• The constant opposition of all of these forces under and on the mobile unit gives this type of valve high performance levels with very little energy input, for accurate adjustment and immediate readjustment in response to hydraulic variations in the network.

Hydraulic engineer’s comments:The pressure differential through the valve is the real motive force of the Hydrobloc valve.If there is no differential, the valve closes. The Hydrobloc valve therefore needs a
minimum pressure difference between the upstream and downstream sides in order to open.This difference is small (0.3 b for the single-chamber model). Using the double chamber model enables
satisfactory operation with even smaller differentials.The multi-functional Hydrobloc system offers accurate adjustment, flexible adaptation and high performance levels that require very little energy input.

1.4 How a control valve works
• The Hydrobloc valve comprises: - a main valve. - a connection circuit linking the upstream pressure zone (A) to the
chamber (C) and the chamber (C) to the downstream pressure zone (B). - a three-way valve (V) is used to control these connections:
• The Hydrobloc control valve comprises: - a main valve. - a control pilot circuit adapted to the required function(s).• The pilot circuit comprises: - an orifice plate (O) on the upstream pipe with a constant fixed-diameter
orifice much smaller than the pipe. - a pilot (P) on the downstream pipe that acts as a variable-diameter
orifice.• The chamber is connected to the pilot circuit at the mid-point (M).• The chamber is supplied via a fixed area, the constant orifice plate (O).• At the same time, it drains via a variable orifice plate, the pilot (P).• The valve regulates when the water passes through the valve body,
but mainly when the water enters and leaves the valve chamber via the mid-point (M).
• As the intake orifice plate (O) is fixed, the pilot (P) opens or closes the Hydrobloc valve.
• If the valve area of the water in the pilot (P) is greater than that of the orifice plate (O), the water leaves the chamber. The Hydrobloc valve opens.
• If the valve area of the water in the pilot (P) is less than that of the orifice plate (O), the water enters the chamber. The Hydrobloc valve closes.
• If the valve area of the water in the pilot (P) is equal to that of the orifice plate (O), the water enters and leaves the chamber equally. The Hydrobloc valve neither opens nor closes. It regulates.
• From the upstream zone to the chamber:
1. The valve (V) lets water into the chamber (C), which fills up due to the upstream pressure.
2. The forces pushing the mobile unit downwards are strongest.
Conclusion: “to close a Hydrobloc valve, the chamber must be filled”.
• From the chamber to the downstream zone:
1. The valve (V) stops the water from entering the chamber (C). It lets the water flow out of the chamber (C). It drains to the lower downstream pressure (B).
2. The forces pushing the mobile unit upwards are strongest.
Conclusion: “to open a Hydrobloc valve, the chamber must be drained”.
• Or isolate the chamber: 1. The valve (V) stops the water
from entering or leaving the chamber (C). The operating chamber is locked.
2. This means that the forces cannot vary.
Conclusion: “to maintain the Hydrobloc value in intermediate position, water quantity in chamber must be unchanged“.
The valve reproduces the movements
of the pilot circuit:
- The pilot closes: the valve closes.
- The pilot opens: the valve opens.
- The pilot regulates: the valve regulates.

Standard XGS valveDesigned for high performance in all situations, it can be used for most functions; this is the widest diameter range. It is particularly suitable for large pressure differentials, and minimises the risk of cavitation (replaces the LG range). - DN 40 to 1000
Double chamber XG valveThis design eliminates the head loss necessary for valve operation. It is particularly suitable for pumping station control. - DN 65 to 400
High flow rate XG valveRecommended in situations in which there is little energy to be dissipated, particularly with functions requiring flow control. This valve generates very little head loss. - DN 32 threaded G1’’1/4 - DN 40 threaded G1’’1/2 - DN 50 to 800

higher pressures.
2. Hydrostab pressure sustaining/relief valve - Series K1 20Functions:• Pressure sustaining: maintains a minimum pressure setpoint to sustain
a full pipe.• Pressure relief: transfers excess pressure from an upstream network to
a lower pressure downstream network, reservoir or outfall when upstream pressure exceeds the set value.
• Closes and restores distribution by manual control.Sample applications:• Maintaining a pressure setpoint (in-line mounting on pipe) in order to: - Ensure minimum pressure at a high point or to a disadvantaged service
connection. - Avoid an excessive pressure drop when supplying a reservoir and spread
reservoir filling over time. - Maintain a minimum pressure on a pump and therefore limit flow rate
to prevent it from working in the cavitation zone.• When a pressure setpoint is reached, relieving pressure to an outlet
(parallel mounting) in order to: - Prevent overpressure in a network when a shutoff component is closed. - Provide a minimum flow rate at a pump outlet to protect it from
operating at too low a flow rate (depending on the pump curve).
3. Hydrostab pressure sustaining/reducing valve - Series K1 50Functions:• Performs the functions of a Hydrostab pressure sustaining/relief
valve (series K1 20) or a Hydrostab pressure reducing valve (series K1 10) depending on the installation operating conditions. The pressure sustaining/relief function always takes priority.
• Closes and restores distribution by manual control.Sample applications:• Increasing supply and protecting a low-pressure network from excess
pressure from a high-pressure network, while guaranteeing a minimum pressure in the high-pressure network as a priority.
• Maintaining a minimum pressure at a pump outlet and stabilising pressure in the downstream network.
4. Hydrostab differential control valve with constant head lossFunctions:• Maintains a constant differential pressure regardless of pressure and flow
rate in order to balance head losses in a network.• Closes and restores distribution by manual control.Sample applications:• Balancing the filling of reservoirs located a different distances or levels

• Each network is unique. If a control valve is to be fully satisfactory and have the longest service life possible, a number of criteria must be established:
- The main function. - The network’s service life scenario, which will determine the operation
of the valve. - The ancillary function(s). - The additional options. - The model and DN. - The network operating conditions (flow rate, pressure, etc.). - The options specific to the operating conditions. - The type of installation.• Our documentation covers the most common pressure and level
management scenarios, with one or two functions.• For more complex flow, pumping station and network functions or valves,

1. Choosing the DN; verifying operation:• The diameter of a valve must match the installation’s operating conditions. To specify a valve, the
most important information required is: - The minimum flow rate Q1, or the flow rate at off-peak times. - The maximum flow rate Q2, or the flow rate at peak times. - The maximum exceptional flow rate Q3, i.e. for fire protection, seasonal variations. - The minimum head loss available in the valve at each of these flow rates.
There are two possible scenarios: - Scenario 1, the head loss Δp available is less than 1 bar. - Scenario 2, the head loss Δp available is greater than 1 bar.
• This vital information can be used in several ways to specify a model and a DN: - By consulting your Customer Technical Support representative. - By entering your data into the Hydrosize sizing software package. - By looking at the table on page 28 for the flow rate ranges for each model by DN according to
the Δp available. - By using the Bayard slide rule or the operating diagrams (page 29), as these are based on the
flow velocities in the inlet area of the valve.

3. Choosing the model and DN by operating range, page 29:Reminder• The diameter of a valve must match the installation’s operating conditions.To specify a valve, the most important information required is: - The minimum flow rate Q1, or the flow rate at off-peak times. - The maximum flow rate Q2, or the flow rate at peak times. - The maximum exceptional flow rate Q3, i.e. for fire protection, seasonal variations. - The minimum head loss available in the valve at each of these flow rates.
There are two possible scenarios:• Scenario 1: the head loss available is less than 1 bar (usable zones: grey and blue zones in the diagram on page 29).
The head loss in the valve must be as low as possible as the head loss available in the network, or the static pressure, is less than 1 bar.
• Scenario 2: the head loss available is greater than 1 bar (usable zones: grey and red zones in the diagram on page 29). As the head loss available in the network is greater, higher velocities are permissible.
All Δp > 1 bar = Scenario 2

4. Choosing the model and DN with the Bayard slide rule:• The instructions enclosed with the Bayard slide rule can be used to identify
the right control valve for the installation and operating conditions.• The diagrams below can be used to check whether the valve will operate in
an optimum operating zone, using the Δp available and the velocity in the inlet area.
5. The operating conditions• Valves are sized depending on the valve area at the valve disc (smaller on
XGS models, approximately the same as the inlet area on XG models), and the water flow velocity or flow rate (Q = V x S).
• The Hydrobloc valve is a pressure retaining valve; its valve area is equal to the circumference of the seat multiplied by the valve disc lift.
• At between 15 and 75% open, valve operation is optimum in normal operating conditions.
• Below 15%, the control quality remains excellent, due in particular to the LFS device, but the valve is subjected to severe operating conditions that may lead to vibration and noise. The valve is probably oversized.
• Above 75% open, control is less effective as the pressure differential becomes very low. The valve is slow to react; it is probably undersized. However, this range can be used in “on/off” mode, as in reservoir filling applications for example.

• These are essentially options on the main valve: - Anti-scaling stem for contact with water containing encrusting limescale. - Assisted opening. - Automatic air valve for venting air from the chamber on valves located at
the top of reservoirs. - Reinforced stainless steel mobile unit to withstand cavitation on models
incompatible with the ACD 040 device. - Mechanical or magnetic switches to indicate open/closed positions to a
control module. - Analogue opening indicator to indicate valve disc opening percentage to a
flow rate calculation programme. - SCADA position transmitter to send the network monitoring system
information about valve movements. - Stainless steel seat on DN higher than 400 XG and 600 XGS if the valve
works for long periods with an opening percentage of less than 15%. - Vertical or horizontal installation. - Reinforced coating for cast iron components. - Stainless steel body for contact with salt water. - Built-in mechanical check valve. - Ozone protection, etc.
Anti-cavitation deviceThe new ACD 040 (Anti-Cavitation Device 0 to 40 bar), BAYARD patent pending, represents an advance in the control of cavitation and high velocities.
Based on the principle of a double slotted cylinder, tried and tested in our needle valves for a long time, the design has been optimised to accommodate high pressure differences at small openings while retaining high flow capacity when fully open (to guarantee fire flow, for example; the DN100 version has a Kv of 103 m3/hr).
The principle of this device is the dissipation of energy in 2 successive, balanced phases, phases 1 and 2. Approximately 2/3 of the pressure reduction is achieved by moving from zone 1 to zone 2. Any cavitation will be contained in zone 2. Flow from zone 2 to zone 3 completes the pressure and high speed reduction, whatever the opening percentage (patent pending).
Using these 2 principles, cascade dissipation and linearity on the opening range, the ACD 040 device offers remarkable performance.

The installation• The recommended equipment is vital for safety during filling and maintenance, as well as for the satisfactory operation
of the valve.• For the purposes of illustration, we will look at the case of a Hydrostab pressure reducing valve. In this case,
the air valve is fitted downstream if the pipe runs downwards to the stabiliser or upstream if the pipe runs upwards to the stabiliser.

Safety and environment:
• Installation, maintenance and repair operations
must be conducted by qualified and approved
personnel. Such operations shall comply with
current local regulations relating to occupational
safety and the environment. Appropriate personal
protective equipment shall be worn. Lifting
accessories and tools used shall comply with
current legislation and the relevant operating
conditions shall be respected.
• With regard to the environment, the valve
is recyclable. Dispose of the cardboard box
and/or wooden crate in a recycling container. The
packing foam is a neutral waste and can be taken
to a waste treatment centre or incinerated without
the release of toxins. Plastic items (bags, blocks
or end closures) shall be processed as household
waste.
Storage, handling:
• The valve can be stored for a maximum of one
year at temperatures not exceeding 65 °C, and
protected from humidity and impacts.
• Handle carefully, using suitable lifting accessories
attached to the lifting eyes or flanges. Do not
under any circumstances lift the valve using the
pilot circuit tubes.
Package contents:
• A Hydrobloc control valve with its specific pilot
circuit.
• The installation and maintenance manuals.
• The pressure gauges, if they were ordered in
addition to the valve.

A safety relief valve; this will protect the downstream network should the stabiliser fail due to a lack of inspection or minimum maintenance. Its gradual leakage will alert the network supervisor of a fault before any possible financial consequences occur as a result of burst pipes due to overpressure.

03 : the valve shown is a Hydrostab pressure reducing valve. In some cases, an orifice plate flange is added upstream of the valve, max. length = 50 mm (flow limiting, pressure modulation).
Depending on the DN, the overall dimensions of the pilot circuit may be larger than those of the valve.
Accessories are BAYARD PN 25 products. Please check dimensions if other products are used.• The lengths “L” correspond to PN 25 equipment. They may vary depending on the PN and flange drilling. The upstream
and downstream “connecting flange clearance 06 ” will absorb this variation.PN 40 bar, consult your Bayard representative.
• The manhole must allow for a height of 1.50 m above the piping and 0.30 m below. If these dimensions cannot be respected for technical reasons, ensure 1.00 m above and at least 0.80 m below for the safety of personnel during inspection and maintenance operations.
• The manhole must include a suitable drainage system. In order for the air valve to operate correctly the location must not be hermetically sealed.
