Used initially in America to test army recruits

Binet-Simon Test calculated a child’s mental age and compared it to his or her chronological age

Mental Age:

The average age normal, average individuals achieve a certain score

Chronological Age:

The number of years a person has lived

1908: The French government commissioned Alfred Binet with developing a method of identifying intellectually deficient children for their placement in special education programs. It was called the Binet-Simon Scale.

1916: Stanford psychologist Lewis Terman released the "Stanford Revision of the Binet-Simon Scale", the "Stanford-Binet", for short.

Intelligence Quotient

A numerical score on an intelligence test, original computed by dividing a person’s mental age by chronological age and multiplying by 100

The original IQ calculation was abandoned in favor of standard scores based on the normal distribution

This calculation was faulty b/c it indicates that a person gets dumber as they age.
