SU BJECT : Update on Picil lo Hazardou s Was t e Si te f or the Week of December 24 , 19 :

During the week of December 24 , 1979, the fi r s t 12 monitor i ng wel ls wer e completed by the Russell Gei sser Company . A f urther

.e i ght t o t en monitoring we l ls wi l l be dril led af t er J anuary 1 , 1980 . Thes e wells will be l ocated based on the resul ts of the resistivity s tudy which wa s Cone by Fred C. Hart Associates .

The tes t trench exc avations were completed by Fred C. Hart Associates this week . The s even trenches were dug t o discover if there was any contamina t ion not discover ed by the r e sistivity study . Thes e trenches were put i n to a depth o f 10-15 fee t with t he use of a backhoe . Hith the completion of t he se tes t t renche s , the Fred C. Hart contract wi th Hitre Corporation has been c ompleted with the exception of the finalized report on the resist i vity and magnetic survey . This repor t by Fred C. Hart is due within t wo weeks . I suggest upon receipt of Hart ' s report we meet with Mi tre to determine if commencing with some portion of the actual cleanup (bas ed on report results) is pos aible and/or warranted .

The topographic surve y firm of Caputo and Wick brought a benchmark into the site which will allow them to survey the s ite thh weaK. This survey will locate the mean sea l eve l elevation of the wells so tha t the depth and direction of contaminat i on can be calcul a ted accura tely.

The waste -absor bent p i llows were checked dur i ng t h is week to see if t hey wer e being aff ected by t he colder temperatures . Non e of t he

Finally , Mitre Corporation tentatively plans to begin well sampl i ng around t he 14 th of J anuary . This will allow f or the wells to reac h equi l ibrium before samples sre t aken .

The work i s curren~ ly procee d i ng as scheduled .
