ICT IN THE EFL CLASSROOM

WHY AND HOW TO USE ICT IN THE EFL

CLASSROOM?

HAYFA MAJDOUB

21st century students are different from older students.

They live in an increasingly growing digital age.

language is defined as a system for communicating. As ELT we should :

increase students’ desire to express themselves effectively and appropriately.

develop their meta-cognitive strategies to help them organize, plan, and make decisions about their learning.

help them continue using the target language outside the classroom

-

To do so most effectively

teachers should make sure:

-the starting point matches the students existing expertise (Vygotsky 1962, Zone of Proximal Development)as well as the learners’ values and concerns.

-The students have

a degree of control

of what they learn

and how they learn

(different learning

styles).

All that is done against a background ofcontinued dialogue with peers and mentors/teachers/

community ( social constructivism, G. Siemens “connectivism”)

Inviting an association to class

“ Today’s students are no longer the pupils our educational system was designed to teach” Prensky 2001 Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants.

ICT integration in Education

and in EFL teaching/learning

in particular is the 1st step

towards living up to

the 21st century students needs

because

“ the student is the heart of

the matter”

Watch the video, and find out what are the questions that M. Prensky raised in his talk?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRR76Mz9NII

Facts:

Today’s grads on average spend -less than 5.000 hours of their lives reading

-over 10.000 hours playing games

- over 20.000 hours watching TV. (according to the video)

Computers, video games,

e-mails, the Internet,

mp3/4 players,

tablets, cell phones, and instant

messages are integral part of

their lives.

…So what?!!

The conclusion is that our

students, Prensky holds,

process information differently

from their predecessors…

Their thinking patterns have

changed…

And I believe that’s the case!

The answers to the three

questions that he raised

lead us to conclude that

If we want to teach and engage

the digital natives,we

have to

thinkabout ways

to

translate and changeour methodology and pedagogy

to meet learners’ expectations

consider that

digital natives :

are used to receiving information really fast

function best when they are networked

They thrive in instant gratification and reward

They prefer games to “serious” work

ICT

is the tool educators should consider

usingwhile

making lesson plans

ICT is a source of contextualised learning.

Learning is more likely to take place when information can be contextually relevant and can be put to immediate use

(Lave and vagner 1991)

Roleplay: Family issues

ICTuse enables students to access

relevant vocabulary and expressions via their mobile phonesduring

a lesson, or while reading a text

Reading the script to record for

a podcast from her mobile phone.

While doing group work, students look up for words in their phones (app)

ICTgives students control over their

learning. They become autonomous, independent learners, and ultimately lifelong learners.

It exposes students to various life-like critical thinking situations.

ICTfor EFL learners

provides more exposure to the target language, more practice,

more time on task, more opportunities for students

to listen, speak, and develop their

communicative competence.

Technological development and progress provided a plethoraof tools

that teachers and learners

can use for

education.

Be inspired so that you inspire!
