PRESENT

The management of the non-fuel cycle radioactive wastes from all over Romania is centralized at IFIN–HH in the STDR Magurele.

Disposal is carried out at the National Repository of Radioactive Wastes (DNDR) at Baita-Bihor.

The Radioactive Waste Treatment Plant at Magurele - non-fuel cycle radioactive wastes

Central building - the incinerator, the liquid effluent treatment installation, equipment for solid waste conditioning, laboratories and offices

Five interim storage repositories.

The annual designed capacity of the radioactive waste treatment plant was 1500 m3 Low Level Aqueous Waste (LLAW), 100 m3 Low Level Solid Waste (LLSW) and 450-500 shielded drums for Intermediate Level Waste (ILW).

The plant treated nearly 26000m3 of LLAW, 2100m3 of LLSW and 4000 spent radiation sources, resulting in over 7000 conditioned drums (220L).

Research and Development

• Development and implementation of modern technologies for radioactive waste management as:

- treatment of aqueous liquid radioactive effluents by filtration, ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis and adsorption on selective

sorbents;

- treatment of solid radioactive waste by super compaction (metal, wood, textiles, plastics);

- re-encapsulation of spent radioactive sources for long-term storage (> 50 y);

- handling techniques for radioactive spent sources for reusing and / or recycling;

• Studies and experimental programs to developed engineering barriers systems used in radioactive waste disposal;

• Research and development programs for new radioactive waste conditioning matrices (aluminium, sludge, ion exchange

resins, etc.) and study on the interaction of the waste form and confinement matrix;

• Development and capability for radioactive waste characterization, analysing of environmental samples (soil, water,

vegetation, sediments) and monitoring program elaboration;

• Development of testing capabilities in laboratory and in-situ conditions (experimental gallery of DNDR) behaviour of sealing

materials and engineering barriers presumed to be used for the closure of Baita repository.

National Repository for Low and Intermediate Radioactive Waste (DNDR) Baita, Bihor county: 1985 -sited in Apuseni mountains, in an old exhausted uranium mine. 21,000 standard drums (220 l). In present, in the DNDR galleries are finally

disposed more than 9000 standard drums. rock meet in galleries are characterized by low porosity and humidity, which

practically means that are dry and compact. Thus, their natural stability leads that for almost years from excavation, with small

exceptions, the galleries maintain the initial profiles. A weak local seismicity and by a higher seismicity activity induced by the Vrancea

epicentral area (700 km far). The main water leakage results form precipitations. The hydrogeological prospection performed underground as well as the chemical

analyze of the water conducted to the result that groundwater does not origin from underground springs.
